Are we STILL debating this Campbell/Umburger stuff? Really?

Campbell's shoulder hits Umburger's shoulder. The force of the collision is what caused Umberger's head to whip forward then back like it did.

It was not a dirty hit.

Thats my point... To their standards the soupy hit is 'dirty'. If thats dirty then hell... I like dirty hockey

I want you to look at the picture, you can SEE campbells shoulder hitting umbergers head. Hence the phrase, he "had his head down"

I'm sorry Pants, I just don't agree with you at all on this.

I was at the game when this happened. My first reaction was the same as yours, that Campbell hit him in the head.

After watching the videos countless times, regular speed and slow motion, from all the angles that I can find, I no longer have that opinion of the hit.

Umburger's head was down looking at the ice after he moved the puck. As he was bringing his head up, Campbell hits him shoulder to shoulder. The both skaters were moving at a high rate of speed , and once RJ gets hit, he ragdolls because he wasn't ready for the contact since he was looking down. His head snaps forward because of the physics of the collision. If Campbell hits him in the head, the head would move directly backwards, not snap forward, then back.

squanto that sounsd a bit reminiscent of some sort of grassy knoll argument, but hows this? Will you at least agree that it was dangerous in the same sense of the word as every hit ovechkin throws. Umberger could have been seroiusly hurt there.

I love the campbell hit, i love the way ovechkin plays. Hockeys a dangerous sport, don't turn it into basketball please.

No doubt it was dangerous. Hockey is a dangerous sport, and there are plenty of perfectly legal hits that could cause injury.

However, there's a difference between a dangerous hit and a reckless one.

Two players skating towards each other at a high rate of speed and colliding is a dangerous hit.

One player pushing another player in the back as they go towards the boards is reckless.

Dangerous hits can be mitigated by experience and physical ability. If Umburger has his head up (like he should have), he sees the potential collision coming and braces himself for it, or moves to avoid it. Even if the contact happens, both participants are aware that it's coming, and can brace appropriately to mitigate the blow.

Reckless hits generally cannot be mitigated. With Ovie/Campbell, Ovie doesn't need to push him there. Campbell has almost no chance to react to the contact (since it's behind him), and because of their positioning, no chance to protect himself from hitting the boards awkwardly. The same goes with any of Ovie's other shoves from behind. The player on the receiving end can't do anything to protect themselves form injury.

I don't want hitting out of the game. I generally love Ovie's fire and hustle on the ice, I just don't want him to continue shoving people from behind and sticking out his knee like he does. Those SPECIFIC plays have no place in the game other than the cause unnecessary injury.

Probably not. Tensing up causes injuries more than being relaxed or prepared does.

But in all seriousness, tensing up probably did him more harm than good.

if you don't tense up, you're not prepared, and will be injured. tensing is what prevents injury. your arm is way stronger straight than it is bent at the elbow. whenever anyone takes a punch, the neck and core tighten and flex.

tensing is how you avoid being hurt. this had nothing to do with tensing, it had to do with a wall.

Where's the evidence of Kaleta hitting from behind? The play when Ross turned around? Yeah...

it's kinda hard to hit someone from behind when they're facing you... soo yea pretty much all hits from behind are started by someone turning... And campbells hit was to the head, I don't know what you're seeing.

See where the white part of umbergers helmet is in contact with the dark part of campbells jersey??

First of all Campbell on Umberger was not a hit to the head no matter how much you slow it down and stop the video, he hit him shoulder to chest.

Okay back on topic, I heard Bruce Boudreau talk about this Oveckin hit and he said OV didn't hurt him the boards hurt him. Is Boudreau seriously that stupid? Oveckin is the guy that push him into to the fucking boards. Yeah the boards did it

Umm Campbell fell and hit the boards, not on Ovechkin, so in reality Ovechkin didn't hurt Campbell, the boards did hurt Campbell.
