Meh, stating facts about Buffalo, but he didn't have to go with the cheapshots.

Everyone knows the rust-belt is what it is, don't need to jab at certain cities because of their rust-belt location and crap.

I could find plenty of things wrong with any Warm Sunshine city also.

The criticisms and jabs are directed tangible things. Love for and a sense of pride in a city are not tangible, nor is what makes any city what it is.

He really said nothing at all, and neither does anyone else who brings up those points.

As an honorary Buffalonian (as per anointment by Phil and Missy ;) ) allow me say this guy's attempts at poking fun or nut tagging the city or the people who frequent it and the surrounding areas are a little weak.

So, lets see his points here.. industry (Former/present), the Bills, housing, Buffalo Wings.. OH and the city has been on the decline for a while now. Geez, found some real original stuff there buddy. Completely amazed that no one has ever pointed these things out before! That's some real awesome stuff! He could land an improv spot!

Before ever stepping foot in the city, I was aware that it, much like others in that general geographical location, was a city that was once a major center back in the day. Sure, in recent times not so much but it never made me put any kind of belief into the stereotype that people like this moron decided to spew. It's real easy to point out flaws in anything, any place or person. It takes a better kind of people to actually WANT to be educated on all things which make up a location and the people who call it home.

When MM and I made it down to Buffalo back in October for the home opener, Phil & Missy took us on a killer tour of the structures around the inner and outer city. Coupled with the knowledge and history they shared with us (toss in some beef on weck and a couple train wrecks to boot) it made us love the city even more.

Just last week while on vacation, we had the chance to explore more of the downtown areas by foot and experience the inner core of the city. As mentioned in another thread, if not for the distance and cost of travel, I think I speak for the both of us that we'd be frequenting the Queen City more often than anything! I absolutely love the city, the people, the culture and all of what it has to offer.

I once heard a saying which I feel applies to this situation. If you're looking for something, ultimately you will find it. Be it good or bad. So if you're looking for the flaws in either people or a location, they're easy to find. A less ignorant individual will treat his or her fellow person and their home with more respect and gratitude than their own. It’s common courtesy.

Allow me to be the one to say that if he doesn’t like Buffalo all that much, well buddy, there’s the I-90. You can leave any time now….

i don't know why this is such a big deal. the kid wrote a crappy article that really didn't say anything awful about buffalo. no, he wasn't nice about buffalo, but come on. it's a rust belt city, not a booming metropolis. it's not even a big deal. the whole point about a buffalo was kind of humorous. all buffalo is famous for anymore is wings and beef on weck. neither of which took a whole lot of ingenuity or anything. do i think he was a little bit of a dick? sure. do i care enough to potentially ruin his career or to harass him? no.

LMFAO, picking up steam now.

Kate Holzemer March 21, 2010 | 9:44 a.m.

Here's a fun-fact about Buffalo that I bet you guys at the Columbia Missourian have already added to your list:

"Buffalonians have computers, and Facebook pages, and Twitter accounts, and we just LOVE linking to 'funny' articles about our fair city."

Enjoy the constructive criticism! Heh.

@ Dan Sonnestine: Sports editor Greg Bowers and I take full responsibility for the column. You're right: It should have been spiked or rewritten.

We screwed up. The reasons don't matter.

They're also reviewing the article for plagiarism since it copies wikipedia pretty badly.

Seriously, it's not verbatim, but on about half of them, the sentences are very similar with maybe one or two words changed, or added to another point to make a compound sentence.

10. According to one unconvincing account, the origin of the name “Buffalo” is a distortion of the French phrase "beau fleuve," meaning beautiful river. It’s said that French explorers shouted these words when they first saw the Niagara River.

For reference, here is the wikipedia entry:
Most popular accounts hold that the name "Buffalo" is a corruption of the French phrase beau fleuve, "beautiful river," a phrase said to have been exclaimed by French explorers upon seeing the Niagara River.

-------

8. Buffalo is home of the windshield wiper. The idea was born on a rainy night in 1917, when a bicyclist collided with a National Roadster car driven by Buffalo Theatre owner J.R. Oishei. Oishei was so shaken by the accident he formed the Tri-Continental Corporation, which created the first windshield wiper.

For reference, here is the wikipedia entry:
When a bicyclist and a National Roadster collided on a Buffalo, NY, street one rainy night in 1917, it was an impact felt around the world. Although the cyclist was not seriously injured, the accident was enough to profoundly shake the driver of the car, Buffalo theatre owner J.R. Oishei.

--------

4. One of Buffalo's nicknames is the Nickel City. Not a reflection of the city's severely low median household income, the name comes from the picture of a bison that appeared on one side of the Indian head nickels that were produced during the early 1900s.

For reference, here is the wikipedia entry:
Buffalo has also been called The Nickel City due to the appearance of a bison on the back of Indian Head nickel in the early part of the 20th century.

------

3. The "beef on weck" is said to have been created by a Buffalo bar owner who thought the salty rolls would make his patrons drink more.

For reference, here is the wikipedia entry:
A local pub owner is said to have used the roll to create the beef on weck, with the thought that the salty top of the roll would make his patrons drink more.

Not verbatim, but still plagiarism. The terminology is waaay too similar for it to be an accident.

the ONE thing he is right about is the Buffalo/bison thing. the USA doesnt have buffalo, every representation of buffalo here in the USA is actually a bison. and they are not the same thing.

and im sure you all know this.

Yep, that's plagiarism.

How stupid do you have to be to copy wikipedia? 1/2 the time it's wrong....oh well.
