Quote:
In a long-awaited announcement, Google said Monday that it will stop censoring search services on google.cn, its Chinese search site.

Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) said it is now redirecting its Chinese users to Hong Kong site google.com.hk, which offers uncensored search results, according to its company blog.

"We want as many people in the world as possible to have access to our services, including users in mainland China, yet the Chinese government has been crystal clear throughout our discussions that self-censorship is a non-negotiable legal requirement," the company said in its blog post.

The company said it "very much hopes" that the government of China respects its decision, though it is "well aware" that the Chinese authorities could block access to its services for users within the country's borders.

Awesome. Nicely done, Google.

So now the Chinese government makes the ISPs filter traffic, and Google wins nothing. Meh.

Reminds me of a quote from my friend's brother, that she posted on Facebook.

Me: Mom, does China have a national anthem?
Travis: “OH SAY CAN YOU SEE, THAT WE WON’T LET OUR PEOPLE USE GOOGLE…”

Bout time. Google shouldn't have engaged in censoring in the first place.

interesting that it's still available in Hong Kong....China acts all tough, but even party bosses won't fuck with their cash cow.

The Chinese government already regulates and controls all network traffic in the entire country.

All this means that Google is effectively out of business in China. The gov't will have them completely blocked within a day or so.

The state already controls all internet traffic. They've blocked google before.

Google winning nothing is the point. They're giving up on one of the largest markets in the world over philosophical differences.

Thats kind of what I meant. It sucks for Google, but I'll be interested in seeing what it actually does to their profits.

It won't touch Google's profits. China was an insignificant revenue stream compared to the rest of their business, less than 1% last I read.

They'd obviously like to be there as it's an emerging market, but I applaud them for telling the Chinese gov't to go fuck themselves.

EDIT : DISCLAIMER, I own 1 share of GOOG.

I would've applauded more if, when Google originally launched a Chinese portal, they didn't engage in censoring in the first place. Sure, they would never have established a foothold, but they shouldn't be bowing to any heads of state.

And there in lay the reality of China. The party bosses don't run China, the all mighty Green back does.
