They're using NASA scientists to determine whether or not Toyota's problems are electrical.

Not good news for the Japanese automaker if this is really the case.

the first thing that came to my mind when I read the thread title: "Hired by whom?"
Ahh, the federal government...I'm sure this has absolutely nothing to do with the Federal governments 60% stake in the former largest auto manufacturer in the world.

Sorry, but if there is a chance it's electrical and these are the guy that can prove it, I'm all for it.

You can't trust Toyota to give you a truthful answer here, and I'd rather not have more Americans die as a result of their poor engineering.

And as an American, I'm happy that GM and Ford might benefit from this.

A head start? That's not how the government operates in normal circumstances and that's my point.

They're basically telling the consumer "Toyota's recall fixes are bullshit, their cars will still kill you."
Toyota has been responsible for more than their share of UA incidents going back to 2007...what has changed since then?

I'm with PSP on this one, although I don't really care too much. I don't have a problem with the government getting a head start on fixing this since there have been documented cases of malfunctions after the pedal fixes.

I drive one of the recalled models. I have my floormats duct taped to my roof...you know...as a precaution.

Toyota didn't recall any cars from their Asian markets because they said those have a different pedal design.
I would imagine we get "North American" models so instances of UA should be as wide spread in Canada but I've heard no reports on that.

My wife brings her car into Monroe for an oil change on the way home from work one day last month. It was the one in NT on the corner of Division and Erie Ave.
So, she calls me up (I'm in town meeting with the development agency there) and I'm right across the street at the old county building on Wheatfield St.
So anyways, she asks me to come over, they've told her she has a cracked rotor. Ok, so I go on over, and I meet this douchebag behind the counter and ask him about it. He gives me the price to fix it. I told him, let me go have a look.

He then tells me no costumers are allowed in the bay area where the vehicles are. So, me being me (a total asshole) I get right up on him and tell him, I'm going to take that tire off of that rim when I get it back to the house, if it doesn't have a cracked rotor, and you just told my wife that in attempt to get a sale, I'm going to come back to this shop and use that same rotor to beat your fuckin ass.

Man, the place got dead quiet, and he just looked at me and said, your right sir, I am so sorry, I just wanted to make the sale.

The moral of the story, well, thats an American Auto Mechanic for ya ;)

I would make the silly assumption that the only thing that would be different would be the length of the wires for the fly-by-wire system, no? I know that driving in afghanistan, the steering wheel was on the right, but the pedal layout was exactly the same.

I will never go near a Monro again. Took my car there for an oil change last summer, as the oil on my car is a pain to change - the filter is located in such a place that it's almost impossible to reach without a lift. While I was there they tried telling me my tie rods were off. I knew there wasn't a problem with them - the car had just passed inspection a month earlier. Plus why the heck would you be checking tie rods as part of an oil change?

They came out saying "it'll be x dollars, do you want us to start now?" They really thought it would be that easy?

So they finished the oil change and I went home - noticed right away that I was leaking oil everywhere. There was a rubber gasket that was attached where the bolt went in that must have fallen off - it was not making anything remotely close to a good seal. I don't see how they didn't figure that out when they were changing it. So I had to buy a new gasket and put it on - which involved essentially changing the oil again. At that point it would have been better to do it myself.
