We with an Ottawa win, I guess they just clinched their playoff spot

It's a phrase that basically means, if you wanna see the Sabres at the top, turn the rankings.

Ottawa and the Islanders play at 2 PM. Once again, a Senators loss and a Sabres win clinches the division.

Pittsburgh plays Atlanta at 1 PM. Sabres are a single point ahead of Pittsburgh and New Jersey for second place in the East. Have no games in hand against either team.

Isles up 3-0, 17 minutes left in the 3rd. If they hold on, we'll only need to win 1 of our last 5 to clinch the division. If we can't do that, we don't deserve the division...

Islanders up 4-0 with 8 minutes left. I think we may be able to close the books on this game soon.

Also, Pittsburgh won, so the Sabres need a win tonight to retain second place.

Sabres with 98 points, Devils with 99, Penguins with 97, each team with three games remaining. A win against the Devils at the end of the year will be a fulcrum in taking second place.

The Sabres can only put up six more points. Math fail.

The game against New Jersey is a four point game. If the Sabres pick up that win, they're in much, much better position to take 2nd place.

If the Sabres win out, they clinch 2nd.

If they win two, they need the Devils to get no more than two points and for Pittsburgh to pick up no more than four points.

If they win a single game, it needs to be against the Devils with New Jersey dropping their other two games in regulation and Pittsburgh needs to gain no more than two points.

They aren't dependent on having a single team that they don't play lose. In total control of their fate.

You obviously don't know how the magic number thing works.

The Sabres need the # of points they get and the number of points that NJ don't get to add up to 8 to clinch 2nd in the conference.

Like has been stated, the Sabres can clinch 2nd if they win out and there win over NJ is in regulation. They would get to 8 as they would get 6 points and NJ would miss out on two with the regulation loss to Buffalo.

And the Sabres magic number to finish ahead of the Pens is 6.

To me, 2nd or 3rd doesn't mean too much to me. In second you're guaranteed home ice in the first two rounds, so that is nice, but I can't get myself to care about that enough because I can't fathom looking past the first round to the second.

I think it's much more important that Ottawa plays Pittsburgh in the first round as the Sabres have trouble with both those teams, so it would be nice to see one of them gone early.

Edit: Yes, I realize I completely contradict myself with the above logic. Sowhat. :P

It's possible that Buffalo can decide who wins the atlantic division, therefore we may decide who we will face in the second round if we get there....
Let's assume Buffalo and NJ win their next game and Pitt. wins out: If we lose against NJ the Devils will stay 2nd, if we win Pittsburgh will get the 2nd seed.

I would prefer NJ in the second round (assuming we win the first round, knock on wood etc.), but I don't really know why, therefore I won't be sad if we lose against the Devils on Sunday.
