First of all, I don't believe the country is run by "by liars, perverts, and procrastinators." Of course, we hear about the scandals of those in power, but keep in mind there are 435 Congresspeople and 100 Senators, not to mention thousands of state legislators, as well as the countless people who work in the executive branch in Washington and in the 50 state capitals.

I believe the majority of those people go into public service with noble aspirations and ideals. They are not some weird aliens forced on us from another planet. They are Americans; people who believed the civics lessons they learned in school that said they could make a difference, that they could build a better future.

However, there is no doubt that the system is not working. As with most things money is the ultimate corrupting influence. Politics has become a full time fund raising occupation. On top of that, we have such nastiness between the parties that we have reached a point that no one can cross party lines to work with the opposition to get things done, for fear of being punished by the wacko fringe in each party. In my opinion, the culprit for this is redistricting. District lines have been so tightly drawn that politicans no longer have to appeal to the broad center of the country, but only to the most extreme elements of their own party in order to get elected.

And all of this is turbo-charged by the 24 hour cable news industry, which has an economic incentive to stoke the fires of extremism (bad news and fear = better ratings). The various news organizations may all have their political bias, but FOX news are the biggest fearmongerers. I'm sorry if that offends my friends on the right, but it is true. They have earned the highest ratings by convincing their viewers that the country is on the verge of a disaster of apocolyptic proportions.

The strength and greatness of this country has always been our pragmatism and ability to compromise in order to get things done. When that ability failed us we ended up in a Civil War. This lack of civility in public life is bad news for democracy.
