Yeah, you're right. Ma bad. Either way though, I have no idea how all of these people were allowed to be on the same plane. This literally has to have that country in complete scramble mode right now to put things back together

Irony, I wasn't being sarcastic and I'm not really sure what you are talking about.

Guys, relax. I am from Poland. Grew up there and have lived in the United States (Rochester) for the last 14 years. Poland is not fucked.

I learned of the crash around 3am Saturday morning. I was sleeping and my phone kept ringing. It was my family calling from Poland as well as my parents who live in Rochester. I got up, got dressed and drove to their house where they have Dish Network with Polish channels. We watched the news events for the rest of the night. It was one of the saddest days i could ever remember in my entire life. Poland shut down for a "7 day morning period".... meaning, all events, festivals, bars, clubs, sporting events, ect, are closed for the week. Many stores closed. Two moments of the night which hit me, were 1.) During the breaking news, they had like 5 news anchors, and everyone was scrambling to find an actual list of people on board. A guy walked to the set handed a piece of paper to a lady, with names, as she read the names, President Lech, his wife, ect, she quickly realized all our fears, that so many of the important people were on board, she started crying right on live tv. The other came when prime minister Donald Tusk announced to the nation what everyone knew, that the president has died. Knowing it is one thing, hearing a major figure, is another.

As for the plane, age does not matter. Planes that you take over seas or cross country, make that trek multiple times a week. The mileage adds up. Presidential planes, don't. Their in great shape. Air Force One is like 21 years old. The Polish plane was 26. Russia has some of the best technology when it comes to planes and such, thus they have a great space program and also have some great military jets. Unlike the United States, they don't show them off in airshows, they keep them low key for the most part. Russia is a poor country, but their military is rich.

I've heard a lot of people in Poland and Europe blame the lack of communication of the radio tower and that it's way behind. Supposedly the airport they were landing at, the radio tower is so out dated that there is no airport in Poland with worse systems. But, we wanted to land there. Russians suggested landing in Moscow. It's a military airport, a very small airport, and no commercial planes ever land there. It's non of our business how they operate a military base. The true reason for the crash was pilot error.

Nobody is scrambling to do anything. In Poland, the 3 most important people in government is 1. President, 2. Prime Minister, 3. Speaker of the House (as you would have here).... they all have separate planes, and none of them can travel together. Other then that, they travel together and why wouldn't they? Poland is not a hated country world wide as say US is for example. When Barack Obama travels to Europe, his staff goes with him. They don't take 20 different trips across the ocean to fly people separate.

As for "scrambling".... they will follow the Polish constitutional law. The speaker of the house is now the intern President. Prime Minister remains as is. Within the next two weeks, the intern President will announce a a date for the new election and it must be held within the next two months.

I read this earlier. The location where the plan crashed is kind of eerie. They crashed near the memorial of a massacre they were going to commemorate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katyn_massacre

This actually, may be the only good to come out of it.....

Massacre at Katyn was denied by Russians for years and years. In fact, if you ask a Russian, who went to school in Russia and grew up there, they have no idea of what Katyn even is. In fact, i play soccer with a guy from Russia. He moved here 5 years ago. He's 35 years old right now. He has no clue what Katyn is and has no idea why Poland was going there in the first place. I asked him if he knew what/where Smolensk is, and he did. Smolensk is a city near by, where the plane crashed, very close to the town of Katyn. Russians refused to believe what happened and were in denial despite tons of prove. Last several years, Russians have started admitted that yes it did happen. A Polish filmmaker once made a movie called "Katyn" it was a movie that showed the true story of what happened. The film was seen in Poland and other parts of Europe, and won several awards. On Sunday night, due to the request of Putin, they played the movie "Katyn" on their local channel. This is a very classy thing, and a moment very proud for Poland to know that the Russians acknowledge it and are telling their people exactly why our president was flying to Katyn in the first place.

For years Poland has been paying respects to this tragic event with nobody else knowing much about it. Due to this disaster, many others are paying their respects and now are understanding of what actually went on in this village.
