Sometimes I get the impression that the main reason Obama is called a Socialist is because it's more politically correct than "motherfucker", accuracy be damned.

Oh come on! That's not what I meant at all.

What I meant is that there are many irrational Obama haters who cannot even articulate why they don't like him. They have been taught that "Socialist" is a bad word, so they figure that would fit.

I'm not saying people who oppose Obama and call him a Socialist are racists. I'm saying they're idiots.

No, that sounds NOTHING like the Obama economic agenda...nothing at all.

I hate the 'regulation' argument.

Private industry has proven time and time again that if you leave them alone, they'll cheat, steal, rob, and do ANYTHING to profit, do ANYTHING to make money.

But, if anyone suggests that business have regulation, it's like you just suggested that they all should punch babies, because regulation 'destroys business'.

Agree; to take it a step farther, typically when business goes unregulated for long periods of time, it's the working man that suffers. Happened in the early 1900s, the 20s, the 50s, and 70s. We're noticing it again now. Every time business is given more "freedom" to operate how they want, it's the common man that suffers.

Huh? I don't think the intent of that article was to infer racism amongst Obama opposition in any way. Weird weird response Cross...

As much as I love you Cross, sometimes the fact that you're SO quick to point out race when talking about Obama gives me pause. Are there people who I think criticize him out of not-so-slightly-veiled racism? Sure. But I don't think that of everyone who calls him a socialist by any means.

The fact is we have a totally uneducated public who thinks that the word "socialist" is somehow a bad word, but who have no idea what it actually means. When I explain the concept of socialism (or even, shudder to think, communism) to my students, most of them think it's a good idea. Of course most of them are from poor families, so I might get another response from kids at a rich prep school. But the point is that people in today's America regularly throw around words that mean nothing to them. So they hear someone say socialist as if it's a bad word, and they look at it that way.

Again from the article...
Quote:
Democratic Socialists are more interested in protecting ordinary people from unregulated capitalism through regulation and progressive taxation.

Also from the article
Quote:
Defining socialism is complex, Llewellyn says, but it starts with a simple goal: Socialists want to introduce democratic features into the economy to reduce inequality.

Obama is merely working within an inflexible system, that doesn't make him a cowboy capitalist.
Of course the "card carrying socialist" isn't going to be happy...he's never going to be happy in this country.
Article fail.

The former President called me a racist (and violent) because I disagree with Obama...sorry, I take that shit seriously.

I know what it means and I still think it's a bad word.

If you believe you're not a racist, it shouldn't offend you if someone calls you that without reason in my opinion. I've been called a racist plenty of times and I just let it roll off my back.

From the article: ..."people don't understand what socialism is."

That certainly is true.

But, then again most people don't know what the words liberal or conservative mean either. Americans see politics as a sport and don't really bother with ideas. Name calling and mudslinging are more the order of the day.

How come the older Bill Clinton gets, the more it appears he is morphing into the man in your lil pic there, Jimmy Carter.

Naa, I don't have any of those...It would probably be easy to find some of GWB with a Hitler mustache though.

And for the record, I really do thing Jimmy Carter was a horrible President and since getting his butt thrown out has been an utter disgrace.

I agree that Carter was not an effective president. But to call him an utter disgrace since leaving office makes it sound like you are simply fixated on the man's politics, and are completely ignoring all the humanitarian, philanthropic, social work, etc. that he has been working at tirelessly for 3 decades now. Personally I think that he has accomplished far more good after leaving office than any other president (granted that's not an even playing field).

Besides you should have a warm place in your heart for Carter. Without an opponent like him, there's no way Reagan gets elected.

This.

I believe most people don't know what the hell they are talking about, they just want to yell at something because their boss is a jerk.
