So now that the fun has ended, it's time to think about next year (It's either that or depression)

Our RFAs are Kennedy and Kaleta. And among prospects in the farm, Gogulla, Weber, Gragnani, Mancari.

UFAs are Grier, Lydman, Tallinder, Torres, Mair, Ellis, Lalime, McComrick.

I don't expect any major moves, as usual. We have around 12 million available in cap space.

I would trade Stafford, and free up another 1.9 million. I would re-sign Kaleta, Kennedy, Grier, Tallinder and McComrick, Gogulla, Weber and Gragnani.

From free agents (or a trade) I would look to add a big body who can score for the first line. And if I could get a QB for our PP, great. Either that or a new PP-coach. What happened to the one we had right after the lockout? We were top 5 in both PK and PP then..

Anyway, my lines would be:

Vanek-Roy-Powerforward
Ennis-Connolly-Pominville
Grier-Gaustad-Hecht
Kennedy-McComrick-Kaleta
Gerbe

Tallinder-Myers
Montador-Weber
Sekera-Rivet
Butler

Miller
Enroth

This would mean one big FA-signing, and fill out the rest with rookies (Gerbe, Ennis, Weber and Enroth). And give McComrick a spot!!

Thoughts?

I'd want to make way more moves than Regier is likely to make.

I'd move Stafford & Connolly.

I'd let Tallinder walk.

I'd do everything to keep Grier.

I'd look to move Gaustad to try and upgrade the center position as Gaustad's growth has stunted.

Pieces I'd look to add:

- A legit #1 center
- A minute munching d-man to pair with Myers
- A PP QB d-man
- A grizzled vet 3rd line center to replace Gaustad

Tallinder has been carried for years. His 'good seasons' are when his partner carries him. He goes.

Lydman is not reliable and is becoming both old and is expensive. Bye.

Grier I want back, but it depends on the number. I wouldn't sign yet another dumb deal to keep him. We should have learned what impact 3M+ lower line players have. Would I give him a Gaustad like deal (2.25 per), yes. If he takes it, cool. If not, bye.

Here is my unpopular move, but one I think needs to be made. A smurf or two on the roster is acceptable, but we have too many. That said, I believe in a short window Ennis appears to be the best smurf, so we keep him. That leaves Roy and Gerbe. I lean toward Gerbe, but Roy is also a tough move. Gerbe is a guy of value, so I have to send something in any deal and he is my guy and one of the keys to getting Connolly the hell out of here.

Stafford, gone.

Mair, gone. (With Kaleta and Ellis brought back, I do not need Mair...time to open up that spot to a youngster)

Lalime, gone.

Sekera, gone. I have seen enough.

I would consider trading Stafford, re-sign Grier and probably Ellis, let all other UFAs walk, and sign a d-man or two. I would specify who I like, but there's no point since Buffalo never signs who I like. The roster would be...

Hecht-Connolly-Pominville
Ennis-Roy-Vanek
Kennedy-Gaustad-Grier
Ellis-McCormick-Kaleta
Gerbe-Stafford/Mancari/new player

Weber-Myers
new player-Montador
Sekera-Rivet
Butler

If there is any chance to sign Hamhuis Darcy better do it.

Connolly is a horse and as such should be treated like one.

Next injury, shoot him.

1. Package Gerbe and Stafford for a 1st and a low level roster player/AHL call up,
2. Do everything I could to add a top six forward with our two 1st round picks
3. Jettison Connolly for a bowl of Grandma Brown's baked beans
4. Make sure that Kassian and McCormick play at least 60 games apiece on this team next year.
5. Play Tyler Ennis on the 1st line no matter who is on the team. This kid, playing with top talent, appear to be a future 60/70/80 point a season player, and has the nuts to go into the corners.

Couldn't agree more but I think with Darcy at the helm this is too much to ask of him. I have a feeling if he intends to keep Tallinder or Lydman he going to lowball them and they will leave because they know they can make more elsewhere. I just don't know if both leave if Weber and Butler would be an upgrade over them. That is what scares me. Butler took a step back this season and Weber everyone thought he might make this team out of training camp and ended up coughing up the puck alot during those preseason games.
I would add one more thing trade Stafford, pick or prospect and out 1st and move up into the top 5 or 10.

Like you said I don't expect any major moves as per Darcy's usual behavior but I would love to see some. Keep Grier, Tallinder, Mair, Ellis, Kaleta and Kennedy. Don't know much about the AHL guys. I'd like to see Stafford and Connolly traded, a back up goalie picked up that can be relied upon, some larger forwards, more reliable D men and even a big name or two if we could entice them.

As DF has mentioned, under Darcy's power I'm not expecting many changes. Although he has been responsible for some pretty awesome picks (Adam, Kassian, Myers & Co.) I think it's just about time to shake things up in the front office. Pretty sure it was Jay who mentioned his (Darcy’s) good points and although he has had his share of good picks and what not, after 13 years, IMO, it's just time.

As Rayzor pointed out today on wgr, it's not that Lindy is a bad coach, just that the message he has been trying to preach and the way he has been trying to preach it for the last few seasons is reason for some looks to be made behind the bench. In the case of the players Lindy has been trying to get his points across too, maybe they're just not coachable. In short, it’s my opinion that if we want to see some changes on our front lines, there needs to be a changing of the guard from behind the bench and up.

I've said recently that this team is about to celebrate 40 years of being a member of an elite group known as the NHL. It's about time they start playing and doing things to prove they belong and are still relevant.

Ha, the "Roster" changes that need to be made aren't so much about the guys on the ice.

It'd be an experiment, for sure, but...

Fire Darcy, promote Lindy. Lindy brings in Randy Cunneyworth (HC), Scott Arniel (AC), Teppo Numminen (AC), as his coaching staff. I like it. It won't happen, but I like it.

Here's an article that I just read. A bunch of points I agree with (though I disagree with his statements about Butler and Sekera). And Phil...if Teppo came back as a coach I'd shit....and then throw a party.

Quote:
HAMILTON: Sabres offseason - The marriage must end

Paul Hamilton Reporting
Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier is a fiercely loyal man. He has told me that he will never fire Lindy Ruff because he believes in him. He said he learned that from Bill Torrey and the Islanders organization that won four Stanley Cups. Al Arbour was Torrey's coach no matter what. In this day and age of professional sports, that type of loyalty is rare.

Regier gets married to his players too and that's where the problem lies. This year's Sabres were near as inconsistent as the past two years. That was proven by winning the division, but when times got rough and the playoffs began, the guys that have been groomed to be the key players failed miserably.

It took me a long time to land where others did last year with Tim Connolly. I thought if he could only have an injury free year, he'd light it up. Off and on he did this season, but where was he when it mattered. He told me last night he was NOT injured so that means that pathetic performance he put on for six games was all him. One assist. That's it! He had two goals in his last 22 games. He had 11 overall points during that time. The time when his team needed him the most. I don't like that the NHL has decided to get away from its stance after the lockout. The league has decided more obstruction is good for the game and less skill is what the fans wanted to see. Connolly played like one of the best players in the league when obstruction was called, but it's more than just that. I think he's lost his will to play. My guess is injuries are the reason. It's rare you see him sell out to block a shot like he used to. It's rare you see any passion in his game. I thought $4.5-million would have been a bargain for him if he stayed healthy. As it turned out, it was a huge mistake.

Derek Roy ended the season with no goals in his last 13 games. Overall he had six points in his last 11 games. Here's a guy who thinks he has all the answers. I was disappointed he wasn't traded in the last off season and now more than ever they have to see that he is not a coachable player. Anytime he does things Ruff's way he is successful, but it's not enough to merit him here. Maybe Ruff thought putting an "A" on his sweater would make him grow up, but I haven't seen it on the ice or in his life choices. He has been protected in this town and he has worn out his welcome. He is a guy who can overcome his size, but all the good players on the way except Luke Adam are his size or smaller.

When was the last time Regier made a huge trade? It was July 3, 2003 when they acquired Chris Drury and Steve Begin for Rhett Warrener and Steve Reinprecht. They had just gotten Reinprecht from Colorado for Keith Ballard. That's seven years, it's way too long. A huge trade is needed and Derek Roy needs to be in the middle of it. I know Roy has a reasonable contract, but that can't matter any more. That should actually help them get better value for him. His cap figure in four million dollars and he's signed through 2013. That's the same year Thomas Vanek, Jason Pominville and Ryan Miller all run out too.

As far as the Sabres unrestricted free agents Mike Grier is the only one who interests me and he's interested in coming back. Matt Ellis and Adam Mair are good fourth liners so I suppose bringing them back is fine although I doubt Mair is coming back since they waived him earlier this year. I can do without his undisciplined penalties. Cody McCormick is good for depth. Raffi Torres does not interest me in the least.

In goal it seems like it's time to find out about Jhonas Enroth or bring back Martin Biron.

On defense, I think Henrik Tallinder had a good comeback season and Toni Lydman was solid much of the time. The problem is this team needs change so maybe the thing to do is let them both walk. I think they'll keep one of them. Now's the time to see if Mike Weber or Marc Gragnani can play. A trade landing a defenseman would be nice. Former number one pick Dennis Persson did not play in any of Portland's four playoff games. In 60 regular season games he had seven points. Second round pick Drew Schiestel had 12 points in 52 games. Another second round pick T.J. Brennan had 23 points in 65 games.

I think Chris Butler and Andrej Sekera still have a chance to be good. I also think they need to take the "C" away from Craig Rivet. I think he's a very good leader, but it really limited Ruff because Rivet had a poor season and you can't put your captain in the Press Box. I have an idea that would either work very well or be a huge flop. It's taking a big chance, but I would consider giving it to Thomas Vanek. I think he would flourish with the responsibility. He cares. He's very focused in the room and takes responsibility for his play and actions. It's something I think could and likely would make him a better player.

So the offseason is here. It's earlier than any of you wanted. I think one thing we all can agree on is status quo is no longer acceptable. The plan must move this franchise forward.

Now this I wouldn't mind firing Darcy and promote Lindy to GM. That wouldn't be a bad start for the coaching staff.

I would try to pry Malkin away from the Pens!

The GM is too smart to do that, but believe it or not the fans will turn on Malkin in a blink of an eye! They want him gone and a winger for Sid brought in! Vanek is an elite goal scoring winger, and he's only 26 (Malkin will be 24 in July). The thinking from the Pens fans is that Staal is ready to be the #2 center (he can't pass for shit and the GM knows this) and that a winger for Sid is the most important thing in the entire universe!

In fact, the media has already blamed a playoff exit on Malkin 3 months before it even started! Malkin is going to be traded, when and where I don't know.

I'm hoping the Pens get swept in round two and somehow Malkin doesn't get a point (even with the lame wingers they give him to work with, this is still an impossibility)! This city will want Malkin's head on a pike!

Wishful thinking, but I would just love to see what Geno could do in a system like Buffalo's with the best wingers on the team helping him out, instead of second or third helpings.

Malkin would be sweet, but we'd probably have to trade vanek, roy, ennis and Myers for him...

Connolly is like Fine Wine. It doesn't get the job done, it's feminine, and it's around when daddy beats mommy.

Here is Jay's off season plan to getting a Stanley Cup Roser:

Trade Connolly and Roy for draft Picks. Anything, dump them, they're essentially useless for my intents and purposes, and the picks don't figure into my plans.

Take the cap free'd up from those 2, and the rest of our FAs and we're at 34.6M

Resign- Grier, Kennedy, McCormick, Kaleta, and Mair (the guy showed up for the last 30 games of the year) all at around 800k-1M

Giving us a roster that looks like:

Vanek-?-Pommers
Ennis-?-Kennedy
Stafford-Goose-Grier
Mair-McCormick-Kaleta

other notable forwards:
Gerbe, Kassian, and possibly Luke Adam

Myers-?
Rivet-Montador
Weber-Butler
Sekera

Miller
?

-------

My first signing,

Paul Martin at 5M per over 4 years
Patrick Marleau 5M per over 2 years (only 1.5M more than Connolly)
Matt Lombardi 4M per over 4 years

I'd also offer at a power play specialist like

Jordan Leopold (2M), and send down Sekera or Butler

Also go out and sign Marty Biron at 1.5M for 1 year.

Our roster then looks like

Vanek-Marleau-Pomminville
Ennis-Lombardi-Kennedy (WOW FAST LINE)
Stafford-Goose-Grier (Bang away boys, Bang away)
Mair-McCormick-Kaleta (Killdozers)

other notable forwards:
Gerbe, Kassian, and possibly Luke Adam

Myers-Martin (Real first pairing)
Rivet-Montador
Weber-Leopold
Butler/Sekera

Miller
Biron

Is that roster much better than we have? I think it's far more skilled, and a better fit for our system. Marleau and Lombardi are pretty responsible in both ends, and good on the PP.

Our back end improves exponentially by adding Martin, and Leopold. And I really think Weber will be able to hold down the back end just fine at this level. If he can stay healthy.

Having Biron as a back up, it's interesting, because he's talented, and adds a good dynamic to the locker room. Much like Lalime, but with some skill left in the tank.

Look at the guys we can bring up - Kassian, McCormick, Ennis - you can count on Ennis and McCormick to start here next year. Put Kassian out there with Kaleta and make other teams' lives miserable. Or put Kassian out there with Gerbe and Ennis. He can make room for them to do their thing. I'd keep Kennedy with Grier, those two just don't stop working.
