In that case, I'm calling Regier signing Hedberg to be Miller's back-up.

No, you're right. I don't know the breakdowns (they've been posted elsewhere) but it'd just be dead money against the cap. Kind of like Yashin's salary against the Isles.

Tim Thomas signed his deal after he turned 35. That changes his buyout situation.

No matter what happens, Thomas' full cap number applies for the duration of his existing contract. There would be no benefit to buying him out other than the 1/3 of the salary saved.

If Boston wants to anoint Rask as their guy, which they probably should, they would be best served trading Thomas.

I forgot about that Squanto.

I know with Yashin it's not his full cap hit also. I've seen his figures and it's like 2/3rds of the cap remaining for him at least.

Basically, it's

Under 26 , buyout if 1/3 remaining contract value over twice the remaning contract length.
26-35 , buyout is 2/3 remaining contract value over twice the remaning contract length.
Over 35, the full contract hit applies to the cap no matter what.

Which is why the Hossa and Pronger contracts were under scrutiny after it was revealed how the deals were structured, what with the steep drop-off of salary in the last couple of years of each.

Not for the buyout numbers, it was for the if they retired it wouldn't account against the cap or it would be a very minimal cap hit to the teams when it expires.

wait, if they retired, the remaining contract wont be against the cap? thats not the way it works, see, if a player retires, the contract is voided, and nothing happens. the contract expires. its for a buy out, unless, and this is possible, you mean something else and i missed the point. which is possible.

Depends on when they sign the deal.

A player who signs a deal after age 35 counts against the cap for the entire length of the contract, even if they retire before the term completes.

What Tom said.

That is why the Pronger and Hossa deals were investigated because of when and how long they signed for.

I believe for both of them, if the retired in the last few years, the cap is off the books and the salary is paid out though.

I don't remember off hand now. And that is a huge reason why those contracts also have a terribly low salary in the latter years of it.

Caps will probably throw an offer sheet at either Halak or Price instead.
