very very unlikely, but the possibility of the wings playing in auburn hills is possible. kinda a neat "what if?"
scenario.

Wouldn't that just be another kick in the nads for detroit?

Why is that a "neat" what if?

well, the palace is a nice facility, plus its 25 minutes from my house, as opposed to 55 in detroit.

I can see the press release now:

AFTER MUCH CONSIDERATION, THE DETROIT RED WINGS ORGANIZATION HAS DECIDED TO ABANDON THE CITY OF DETROIT, TO FUCK THEM IF YOU WILL, SO THAT ironyisadeadscene CAN SHAVE 30 MINUTES OFF HIS COMMUTE TO THE GAMES.

the palace is bigger, newer, and in the rich suburbs of detroit. the joe louis arena is pretty dumpy, and likely will be renovated, so theyll play at the palace in the meantime. its not a "fuck you, detroit." its a temporary move.

if it even happens, which it probably wont.

this is the palace set up for a pistons game:

this is for a highschool game:

"The Palace of Auburn Hills is the prototype new NHL/NBA arena upon which virtually all others were based in the 1990's arena construction boom. Opened in 1988, the arena is still one of the busiest in North America, and its revolutionary design ideas included moving the suite level down into the 100-level (previously they were usually up in the rafters) and segregating the 100, 200 and 300-level concourses from each other. Compare the Palace with the 8-years-older Joe Louis Arena and they seem to be decades apart; compare the Palace with the 8-years-newer HSBC Arena in Buffalo and they're virtually identical. That's how revolutionary the Palace was."

HSBC arena is WAAAYYYY nicer though.

No lie, that's a good-looking arena right there.

My guess is they'd spend a year at the Palace while intensive renovations would be undertaken at JLA? (Hypothetically, speaking)

Ehhh it wouldn't be a big deal if they left Detroit for Auburn Hills. It's not like they're relocating the franchise. The Bills used to play in Buffalo, now they play in Orchard Park. Doubt it'll happen though.

I heard rumblings of this a few years ago because of General Motors and how bad the economy is in Detroit. It would suck if the NHL would lose an original six team

the team would just be moving to the suburbs for a short period of time till the JLA was renovated or rebuilt.

I like the idea. JLA needs a renovation VERY bad...

not in the near future, but as detroit shrinks, and grand rapids gets bigger, its possible that all the detroit teams will relocate to grand rapids. but as of now, no.

its a theory. grand rapids wants a team, and grand rapids is expanding. meanwhile, detroit is shrinking (though the suburbs are still growing)

say 50 years down the line, grand rapids is 600,000 people, and detroit its 450,000 people, i can see the teams relocating within the state.

Holy shit when you say Detroit is shrinking you are not kidding. 450,000 is almost the size of London Ontario
