I'm supposed to be comparing 32 vs 64 bit Win 7 for my recommendation for the Marine Corps. To me, it's pretty glaring. The operating forces have old gear (printers, etc). This is a short and sweet point paper I'm making. What am I missing, and do I have anything wrong? (XC, Squanto, SATW, in particular?)

- To take advantage of the memory addressing of 64 bit, you need to have at least 4gb of RAM.
- 64 bit does NOT support hardware with 32 bit drivers.
- Some 32 bit programs will simply NOT run on 64 bit OS; others will run at degraded performance levels.
- Not all software will even take advantage of the extra memory that a 64 bit OS supports unless it has been programmed with a 64 bit processor in mind
- 16 bit applications WON’T run (not sure if we even have any in the environment any more)

In short, unless the user is running resource-hungry applications (Photoshop, video editing software, AutoCAD, etc), a 32 bit OS is a safer bet to maintain customer satisfaction and continuity of service.

In short, to take advantage of a 64bit OS, you need to have a single process addressing more than 2Gb of memory.

Even if you use photoshop heavily, that usage is hard to achieve...maybe video editing large files.

If you're making a recommendation for desktops/laptops/workstations then there's no practical reason to recommend 64bit IMHO.
The real advantage is in server/database applications or purpose built workstations for, as you mentioned, CAD or video editing.

Others please chime in, that's just my $.02
64 bit has been around for decades, it's just trendy in the consumer market now...why, I have no idea.

Definitely just workstations; our servers are mostly 64 bit running ESX 4.0, AFAIK. Of course there are some legacy systems, but they've done a good job updating and migrating as much as possible.

We're about to pilot a P2V program (I just love abbreviating that...childish, I know) to try to start reeling in the stragglers.

Seeing as how 64 is a bigger number than 32 (almost TWICE as big!) i'd say 64 must be better.

All I know is i've got a dual core dell with 64 bit vista, and I can have like...27 porn vids running at once, it's fucking incredible.

You've probably got boatloads of memory. When it comes to Vista, it's a prerequisite for you to even be able to boot.
