Layoff can be temporary, but good companies will lay you off simply to allow you to to collect unenjoyment right away. If you're fired, it's usually considered to be for cause, and your former employer can challenge your receiving of unemployment if they so choose. Sometimes it takes longer for unenjoyment to kick in under that scenario.

Being laid off is much less severe than fired.
It basically means, through no fault of your own, the company can no longer employ you for whatever reason.
In the corporate world being laid off is often accompanied by severance (a big "sorry we let you go" check) and even assistance finding new work.

and yes, being laid off means you can collect unemployment right away...and congress in their infinite wisdom has increased that garbage to 99 weeks.
Because nothing says "go find work" more than a bi monthly check in the mail.

Hey...sometimes that check pays more than "work" you can find. I saw signs for McDonalds hiring, but my unemployment check paid more. McD's was gonna give me $7.50/hr....my unemployment was around 15. Simple math told me to just keep putting resumes out.

Eventually, I gave up on finding work in the town (and even the state) I was living in; searched out of the area, and in a week, was HIRED.

Yeah, same boat here. The unemployment is better than most jobs I could find right off the bat. My first thought was to start working somewhere to keep cash coming in, but I looked into the unemployment and its better for me financially. I think it comes down to around $11.

Well I don't have a great job at all, so I'd rather do nothing and get 11 bucks then do a shit ton and have to deal with people for 7.25/hr.
