I'm non-religious, I've got nothing against regular Muslims, I've got Muslim friends...but this is bullcrap IMO.

Certainly tolerance and respectfulness should go both ways.

opening it on 9/11?
Seriously?
Go to hell douchbags.

I didn't really like that article, it leaves too many questions. It seemed like the author was hell bent on painting it as a slap in the face by the islamic community and I'm not sure that's really the case. I mean what is the intent and meaning behind those that are opening it? Is it supposed to be sort of a memorial, a symbol of rising above bigotry a f-u as crosscheck said? I need more info.

Lets give them the benefit of the doubt and say their intentions are completely above board.
I don't have a problem with a mosque being built...whatever.

Why open it on the 10th anniversary of 9/11?
Why that day?

I can think of no reason that isn't a direct insult or worse.

Maybe as an apology, or a symbol that the majority of the muslim world does not agree with the extremists. I mean it's all guessing at this point anyways but I don't necessarily think it was bad (yet).

That seems an unlikely explanation to me.
At the very least it's insensitive and ill advised.
Surely anyone can see that...as they should (and I can only assume do).

wow, I find myself in the unusual position of agreeing with CC on something remotely political.

I cant see any way this isnt a big 'fuck you'.

It makes me mad thinking how it seems to people on 'their' side...they manage to take down the beautiful symbol of our economic might (or whatever), and then ten years later to the DAY, a mosque opens across the street. Fuck them, if 'we' thought like 'them', that fucking place would be bombed it's first day open.

This thread may be the only political thread the majority of us agree on.

i dont really care too much. i mean, yeah, its insensitive, but im pretty sure the majority of Muslims are respectful and law abiding. not terrorist. that would be like assuming all baptists as horrific people because of westboro.

could they open it on another day? yeah. but in the end, do i think they are trying to step on anyones toes? not too much. it could also be taken as a muslim tribute to 9/11 as a show of good faith? but without any clue as to what they are doing?

i dont know. but either way, we shouldnt make TOO big a deal. people are people.

I would stand in the rafters clapping.

This is bullshit, and we all know it.

Mike, I think you're way off the mark on this one. WAY off.

Hate to say it, but all baptists are hateful, closed-minded, condescending haters. All of them. Just not as loud about it.
