Well, just like an elephant, Darcy always remembers certain things.... like contract disputes.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Peca. He was a great captain of this team. However, when a guy sits out an entire season, putting his team in jeopardy without it's leader, that says a lot about his character and his commitment towards team play.

That's really not all that uncommon, at least not from veteran players like Grier and Rivet. There were a few players that did that sort of thing for the Pens over the years, however, the results were not good on the ice. Recchi talked LeClair into playing for Pittsburgh and he was just awful at that point in his career.

In my humble opinion, the players should not take an active interest in recruiting unless the GM actually asks them too, and I don't think a GM should ever have to ask a player to do that. The players should just worry about playing the game, and management should worry about everything else. Now, if a potential free agent has concerns about the city and what living in a specific area is like, what the fans a like, etc.. Then sure, talk to somebody who is not in the business of blowing smoke up your ass. But to announce it at a press conference, well...it just seems rather tacky to me, for lack of a better word. :)

EDIT: Having just watched and listened to what Mr. Grier had to say, I don't think it was a big deal at all. He was just elaborating on the circumstances that brought him to Buffalo. Then again, if I'm Connelly maybe I'm switching channels and muttering under my breath something like, "What a dick, why don't you just sleep with Marleau and get it over with.". LOL

ZOMG MARLEAU TO TEH SABRES!!1!

But really, this really couldn't be a bad thing. Maybe he is taking to Patty and/or Pavelski?

The way I see it, he will prolly be calling up his former teammates and good friends of his throughout the league who are free agents and try and get them to come here... like thats good and all and Im sure that some of them will listen to him adn what not and hopefully all will be good with the world lol. But im excited to see what happens

See, THAT is the kind of creative thinking I hoped to see. Does Gonchar have a NTC or NMC that a call from Grier could help get waived, and what kind of package would the Sabres need to offer? I'd think Pominville would be involved.

I bet Grier is respected by many in the league...you have to love the type of hockey he represents. Maybe him putting a good word about the Sabres will go a long way for up and coming free agents...

Gonchar is slated to be an UFA this summer unless he re-signs with the Pens beforehand.

He made $5M this past season, yea? My guess is he'll command at least that. I still wouldn't be opposed to the Sabres offering him a two or three year deal. He gots what they needs.

That would make me giddy with excitement. That would take care of our need for a PP QB

Signing Gonchar would make both Lydman and Tallinder expendable, as it would satisfy the need for a solid veteran defenseman and PP QB (as you said). I'd put him and Myers right on the top PP unit together.

Certainly wasn't in the playoffs.

I think Connolly put in more effort in the postseason this year.

I LOVE THIS POSTER!

Now, granted, if there was a way to sign Gonchar and keep Lydman as well, plus dishing off Sekera and Butler for Weber, I'd do it. But that's a tricky scenario I don't think Darcy is savvy enough to pull off.

Regier is stupid when it comes to trades and FA signings.

I fixed it for you, because it's not like they've all been bad. It's just the recent ones.
