Alright. I'm still unsure of the rules. I thought it was only for snarky comments.

Lol. I've realized that Buffalo/Hamburg is a very very small world indeed.

Indeed. The place is just frustrating. And it sucks even worse now. We got a new GM when I was away at college, and when I came back we had all this new stuff. We have THREE separate cleaning lists we have to do every single day, that have some of the weirdest and most pointless tasks ever. It's the most ridiculous thing in the world. Unfortunately, my summer is stunted by going out of town and such, plus I'm heading back to Buffalo in August, so there's just not enough time to find a new job.

ok, so if homer simpson and marge simpson are both 37 years old, and barts 10, that would mean the 2 were 26 when bart was concieved. but much of the storyline encompasses marge being "stuck" with homer and not going to college because homer knocks her up right after highschool.

Maybe she got started in school really REALLY late, and Homer flunked so many times they were both 26 year old seniors?

I just bought my first harmonica today, and am so psyched to learn how to play it.

Maybe Marge was one of those kids who decided to "take a break" after high school...and just never went back. Then she got pregnant with Bart and she suddenly felt trapped even though in reality she never was going to got o college in the first place!

Well...I talked to the owner of Encore and he said that he didn't really have many hours to give me because summer is their slowest season. So he called his friend who owns/manages (I'm not sure if he's the owner actually) a restaurant on the lake (on the small boat harbor, if you know where that is) called Dug's Dive. It's a pretty popular place in the summer... but I'll be working in the ice cream stand and hostessing. He also said on slow nights he'll get me waiting tables since I told him that I'd eventually like to become a server.

It is true that summer is the slowest season. People don't really dine in, even in on the weekends, and the only time it would get busy was when it was raining or storming out. There were some days at Red Lobster I would only go in for 2 hours and it would pretty much cost me more in gas to drive that week than I actually got paid. It gets painfully boring, so at least he was up front about it and got you a job elsewhere. I hope you enjoy it, it's a little bit of an adjustment at first!

One more thing I cannot stress enough.

If someone wants a vacant table, because trust me, people are weird and have weird seating preferences, just do it. If you show any bit of hesitance, people are gonna think they're inconveniencing you, and some people don't take that very well.

Some examples people complain about:

People don't like sitting near service stations, kitchens, don't like sitting in the middle of the room, want a mother fucking boof (booth), want to face the door, want to be away from little kids, want to sit near a window (maybe not applicable since it's outside?), this table isn't big enough, but this one over here that's the same size is, table's too low, chair's too high, etc. Everything that you would never think matters, matters to some people; it does get a little ridiculous at times.

2 things you have to be aware of:

One size does not fit all. Some fat people cannot comfortably sit at some tables, especially if the chairs are fixed, i.e. booths. Sometimes it's better to guess where people would be comfortable instead of possibly embarrassing them. If they specifically ask for a booth or a table that's a tight squeeze, tell them they can have whatever they want. Some people like the feeling of the table digging into their stomach while their boobs rest on the table. That's their prerogative, but I would only try that if they specifically request.

I know you would never do this on purpose and trust me, I didn't either, but you have to be conscious of the race of the people you're seating and where you're seating them. It seems weird and obviously there's no intent to actually segregate people, but sometimes just due to how people come in you end up seating people of one race together. People actually notice that stuff and sometimes say things, which is totally ridiculous, but you'll know what I mean when I say no one knows how a restaurant works until they work in one. They won't understand you're using rotation and just making things fair for the servers.

Hopefully you don't even have to run into situations like that, but there's somethings you never think would be an issue until you have actually worked in it.

Thanks for all the advice, Beth...I really appreciate it! While I've never worked in the restaurant industry before, working at Regal has taught me that some people are downright crazy...and it doesn't surprise me to hear about all the whacky and ridiculous things people demand when getting seated. Should be an interesting summer...
