Well. I bought an iPad today and am currently relaxing in my bed typing to you guys on it. First impressions are amazing so far, this thing seems right out of star trek (the pad).

JEALOUS

That's the first anything technology related that I really, really want. Usually I'm incredibly apathetic, buuuut...

I got mine two weeks ago. I do like it alot, even though it is in fact a fingerprint magnet.

A friend of mine told me that Apple is going to release another version before Christmas that doesn't get full of fingerprints.

The fingerprints are VERY noticeable when the screen is off, but not so much when it's on, depending on your brightness settings.

It's not much worse than my iPhone really.

I don't lust after Apple toys, but the iPad has me very interested. Consider me jealous as well.

I absolutely hate the glossy screen crappy trend Apple has started.
I recently upgraded from a core2 duo macbook pro to the newest version of the macbook pro and it's great...except the damn glossy screen that would only look good in a showroom, is glossy for no functional reason and makes me want to punch babies.

Stupid Cupertino....they know nothing when it comes to industrial design ;)

I have one of these anti-glare screen protectors on my iPhone. I really like it and it doesn't get fingerprint-y. Although the bare screen on the iPhone just feels better, but I don't really care.

Uh...by what definition?

A few months ago, by total count it was something like 150,000 iphone apps to 20,000 android apps.
Also by distribution, there are iphone apps with over 100,000 individual downloads.

I don't have an iPhone, I don't want an iphone or an ipad, but I feel it necessary to challenge your constant and mostly unwarranted disdain for all things apple ;)

Yeah...

While the Apple app store has some things that I won't defend, and don't like, there's a shitton more apps, and higher quality ones at that.

My boss has a Droid, and we're constantly downloading and comparing apps on the two. Not for any cock wagging about what's better, but just to check them out. Most of the time when we look for something, I have 3-4 options on the Apple store, and he's lucky to have one on his Droid. Most everything that he can find is ok, but almost everything is better on my iPhone.

Android is great, and it has great potential. However, it's still far behind where Apple has the iPhone OS. They're gaining market share simply because Android is available on more devices than the iPhone OS, even including the iPad. Keeping that into consideration, almost half the phones running Android are still running something in the 1.0 train because their carriers haven't pushed the updates, or the hardware won't run it.

Android is a great alternative if you don't care for Apple's offerings, but the iPhone OS is still the standard everyone wants to meet.

What do you think about AT&T's new pricing points on data?

Well I learned today (after a rogue monitoring server blew up a colleagues iPhone with over 700 sms messages) that there is no way to bulk delete sms conversations in the iPhone OS (not with the att.net sms bridge...the cingular sms bridge is better in that regard but it breaks up all messages into 140 character chunks which is also annoying).

Sorry, that's effing lame...the poor guy gave up and just reset his phone in the face of hours of manual deleting sms conversations.

I'll take my blackberry any day and use a computer when I need actual computing power ;)

Well, he could back up his phone every now and again and he wouldn't have that issue.

Okay yeah, that is pretty lame.

Yeah, I get all my Nagios pages as email -> txt, and it blows. Totally feel his pain.

I think the new data plans suck. On a per MB basis, they're charging almost double. I feel bad for those 3G iPad owners that thought that they could turn on an unlimited data plan at will. Now they're fucked unless they turn on unlimited data by Monday and let it auto-renew. The second anyone cancels unlimited data after Monday they can never get it back.

Personally, I think this confirms that Verizon is in the mix, and fast. There's no way they would have released the iPad and bragged about the ability to turn unlimited data on and off at will knowing that AT&T was going to pull this. Jobs' comments about AT&T last night at All Things D 8 weren't exactly glowing either.

I am personally more excited about the HP slate, seems a little bit more capable as a compact touchpad.

A little disappointed they decided to drop the full version of Windows 7 on it though. I think it could have stayed even sales wise with the Ipad.

I'm not sure I agree with you there. Desktop OSes don't seem to translate well to tablets. Microsoft had made that Tablet OS for years and it barely sold except for the niche medical field.

Tablets need an OS that provides a decent touch user experience. The iPhone OS does that, and so does the Palm OS that HP is going to use. Their problem is that Apple has a 2 million (and counting) unit lead on them in the space. That's hard to make up.
