Sometimes you guys are slow and actually have lives. I've been sitting on my butt for most of every day since I've had surgery so I need you guys to keep up.

I had my upper jaw repositioned upward and my chin button extended a week ago today.

My doctor said my swelling is actually really low considering it has only been one week. I've been pretty uncomfortable and will continue to be probably until I can finally eat solids again (about 5-7 weeks from today). Pretty much, my diet sucks and I really miss hard food and I think I've lost about 3-5lb so far.

Day after (or 2? can't remember):

Was this jaw work cosmetic?

Inevitably, it is cosmetic and sometimes it can be ruled as purely cosmetic by the insurance companies and they won't pay for it.

It's called orthognathic jaw surgery. It's basically repositioning of the upper, lower, or both parts of the jaw. For me, my upper jaw grew in too far forward and needed to be moved up. I had braces twice and my teeth shifted back, twice. Too much of my upper gums were exposed and I couldn't naturally close my mouth (I can't do that right now either, but hopefully I can once the swelling goes down ). My teeth could have eventually fallen out because my gums were constantly inflamed from all the mouth breathing I was doing. My orthodontist when I was younger was a moron and blamed me and said I wasn't brushing my teeth properly. If your lips don't protect your gums as they're supposed to, your gums get really inflamed.

I also hated the old profile of my face; I had a very weak chin. That's where the chin implant came in, which was purely cosmetic and cost $1200 that we'll get back through our flex plan (thankfully).

So yes, I did want it for cosmetic reasons, but I also knew it would be very helpful for the future regarding my mouth's health.

Since it was deemed medical, I only had to pay for the $75 copay and $1200 for the chin. Since I did them both in one shot, the insurance covered the anesthesia, hospital stay, and everything else that wouldn't have been covered for the chin otherwise. Plus two recovery times would suck. This one sucks enough.

Well, I wouldn't consider that cosmetic surgery although it has a cosmetic element. If the position of your jaw made it so you couldn't close your mouth, and it affected the health of your gums, I'd consider it to be a medical procedure, not a strictly cosmetic one. I just didn't quite understand why your jaw needed to be repositioned. Now I do. Speedy recovery OK?

Well, I did have some vain reasons to want to get it done and since there was a medical reason, too, I could totally justify it. I just meant that some people choose to get it done where there is no medical reason to.

I'm hoping for a speedy recovery, too! :)

Doctor said today she can't believe how much I'm not swelled. I look at my face in the mirror and think I look hideous and swollen, but even looking at those two pics I posted there is a definite difference.

You seem to be motoring along quite nicely Beth. Glad to see you're healing up better than expected.

I had the suggestion and opportunity to have a similar surgery when I was in high school (I have a massive overbite, which when corrected would have moved my chin down and forward).

But they cited something like 6 weeks of my jaw being wired shut so I took a pass on it ;)

Fortunately, I only have to endure 4 weeks of my jaw being "rubber banded" shut and I can remove the rubber bands when I eat and brush my teeth and all that jazz. That is preferable.

Had they needed the added "stability", they would have wired it shut. Thank god that was not the case, because like cross said, it would have been 6 weeks. Fuuuuck that.
