Galarraga will likely move on with his major league career with the stinging Harvey Haddix-type knowledge that only one of the worst blown calls in baseball history prevented him from becoming the 21st pitcher to throw a perfect game — and, even more incredibly — the third perfecto this season and second in four nights.
long story short, umpire blew a call that cost a pitcher a perfect game.
the comments people are leaving are actually getting to me more then what actually happened (of which has little effect on me). people wishing for the umpire to die and saying that umpires are ruining the game and all that other shit is moronic and unfortunately expected from people when something like this happens.
the thing that, surprisingly, is bothering me is people saying that baseball should reverse the call and give the guy the perfect game. If i was the pitcher, i would tell the league that i dont want it that way. the current status of baseball is that they cant review the call and that the umpires call is, more or less, final. while it might be the right thing to do, i think it would cheapen it.
the worst part is people saying that in situations like this, where a perfect game is on the line, that the rules should be shifted towards the pitcher to make sure he gets it. this is straight up bull shit. regardless of what is going on in a game (whether its 0-0 with duel perfect games, or 10-2 blow out) the rules shouldnt be expected to change. a tie goes to the runner reguardless of how well a pitcher is pitching. i mean fuck, would want a ref to not call a penalty shot because a goalie has a shut out going?
its ridiculous and insulting to the game, the fans, and everyone involved.
back to what actually happened. was it horrible, of course. but the umpire manned up and admitted that he was wrong. there really isnt much else that can be asked for from him. he is human and mistakes are made. the guy was out by less then half a step. now while in baseball is long, in reality (if you look at the picture) is all of 8 inches.
