So my company just replicated a test lab and moved to a new building. One of the things I was adamant about was getting adequate cooling in their existing server closet; they only had a few switches and a phone system in there before, so it wasn't imperative to have additional cooling outside the building's existing ventilation system.

About a week after we moved in (the equipment didn't cause much of a temp spike; keeping the room's door open was an acceptable risk at that point to moderate the temp) a local HVAC company showed up with a 14000 BTU unit. Not being a HVAC guy, and not being the task lead or project manager, I assumed that the equipment we got was what we needed. Install completed, closet door closed, fast forward 48hrs; the room is actually warmer than the office. I call the HVAC guys back with a ?wtf? look on my face, and he says "this is the equipment that we calculated when we did the bid, has any equipment been added to the room?". No.... "Well, we got the bid 3 years ago, this is what we came up with."

Long story short, the building's admin decided that since I stomped my feet they would finally buy the AC unit they'd skimped out on when their original equipment was installed. They *didn't* resubmit for a recalc. My question is this:

I need to find the wattage being used by my UPS' (uninterruptible power supplies). I am led to believe that the UPS will draw as much wattage as the equipment that it is supporting, plus a percentage of leeway at the step transformer, which is what makes it "uninterruptible". Here's what I've got:

Item |Watts |BTU/hr
Storage 1 |185 |632
Storage 2 |428 |1462
3com |46 |157
cisco 2600 |76 |260
catalyst 1 |82 |280
catalyst 2 |82 |280
powerconnect 1 |50 |171
powerconnect 2 |50 |171
poweredge 1 |690 |2357
poweredge 2 |690 |2357
poweredge 3 |354 |1209
poweredge 4 |354 |1209
proliant 1 |308 |1052
proliant 2 |308 |1052
Phone system |135 |461
UPS1 |240 |819
UPS2 |1555 |5309
UPS3 |1908 |6515

Sorry for the crap formatting. I'm working on it. Anyways - operating temp of the equipment is 40-95*F, so I want to keep the temp <=70, and the room is 756 cubic feet.

heh...I haven't use the table code in a long time, I can't tell ya really.

For the UPS's, you should be able to find all the numbers you need on a tech specification sheet provided by the manufacturer.
At least minimum and maximum numbers anyway.

Do you have power monitoring anywhere like on a switched PDU? That could help you determine *actual wattage / amperage.

:nope:

No power monitoring. Wish I did, but it would be after-the-fact anyways, no? We eventually got in touch with APC and got the wattage, but it was a PITA :/

you need to get some of these

They report power usage back over snmp if you like pretty graphs, plus you remotely control all the outlets if you need to power cycle something remotely. I don't know what I'd do without them in my datacenter.

Ahh...all my gear is in downtown LA and my office is in Santa Monica...I try to avoid actually traveling to the datacenter at all costs ;)

I don't blame ya; not at all. Though if you need a datacenter dink at any point, PM me ;)

I'd love a rack monkey and I used to have one working for me but alas, he was downsized so we could use his headcount for another developer :(
Earlier in my career I was all about the datacenter stuff, but I really have no interest in going there now.
