So i am thinking about buying a new 4-wheeler ATV......It's going to have to be a 4x4 due to the hairy trails around here......
This is my first 4 wheeler, so i am not exactly sure which one to get......I think i will be mostly using it trail riding....I also may use it to pull a canoe, fishing gear etc.....

There is also the possibility that i could use it to plow someday, or to haul chopped trees down on my property......

It seems that i am leaning towards getting honda as i have heard they are a reliable machine, and have great resale value....

The big question for me is what size to get....I was thinking of getting something like a 650 which should give me enough power to do almost anything....but that would be more $$$......A guy i know told me that something in the 400 range would be ideal (with around a 500 being the biggest i would want to get).....He said the bigger machines are more tough to manuver on the trails......

Anyone here have a 4-wheeler, or some good advice/input on this topic ?

thanks.....MILM

Honda trucks have independent suspension (at least the last I checked) which makes them nice to drive on a highway but exceedingly bad off-road.
Find something with a solid axle.

I'm a Jeep guy and I'd say if you're serious about trail riding you should be looking at something like an Unlimited Rubicon.

EDIT: and yes, a longer wheelbase is bad off-road since most trails are cut for a wrangler wheelbase....something slightly longer than a standard wrangler (unlimited / scrambler) is ideal since they won't get stuck in wrangler ruts.

BTW, being able to pull chopped trees and stumps is less a function of horsepower and more a function of gear ratios.

Get a 4-wheeler that has a transfer case so you don't have to have a all time 4 wheel drive one as that will put tremendous wear and tear on the front axle and you'll have to have it rebuilt at some time.

I know someone who has a all time 4 wheel drive 4-wheeler, and he's had to have the front end rebuilt at least once even from not using it on heavy trails.

Just riding around you can be in 2WD and save the front end of it, and when you need it, then switch to 4X4, because you really don't need 4WD all the time and even on some trails which you think you do with a 4-Wheeler.
