I'm upgrading to Ubuntu 10, and I'm at a step I don't know how to move forward from.

A window has popped up during the process called "Debconf on ubuntu" and it's asking me which devices I want GRUB-PC to automatically run for. Well, I'm gonna go ahead and use deductive logic to figure out it wants to know what parts of the HDD I want it to install to.

I've got three options:
/dev/sda (120034 MB, TOSHIBA_MK1246GSX
- /dev/sda1 (1572MB)
- /dev/sda2 (118459MB)

It says that if I'm not sure which drive is designated as the boot drive by my BIOS that it's recommended to install GRUB to all of them, but then says it's possible to install GRUB to partition boot records as well...only that's NOT a good idea in some cases because then it has to use the blocklist mechanism and ISN'T recommended.

Uhm. Help.

Are you upgrading from a previous version of Ubuntu, or "Upgrading" from Windows? ;)

Haha I "upgraded" from Windows last year, man. I'm upgrading from 9.0.3, I believe, to Lucid Lynx which is 10.??.??.

I thought you could do the upgrade from the package manager?

That being said, I know I'm not of much help; I know the basics of the install process, but not enough to tell you what to do in this instance, only what I would do.

Well, I can do the upgrade from the package manager, but it'd still bring me to the same point I'm at even though I upgraded via the update manager that pops up when I start up.

I'm like two steps from finalizing the upgrade wahhhh

I would make the assumption that GRUB is currently on sda, and that sda1 and sda2 are partitions or removable storage.

I'd start the upgrade from the package manager; simpler that way overall.

With respect to GRUB, I'm fairly sure based on what you posted you want that on /dev/sda, since that's where your MBR lives anyways. sda1 and sda2 are just data partitions.

Oh. OK.

Ya know what, I don't know why I just didn't text you, Tom. Know I feel like a colossal derp, which Missy is confirming through snide remarks to my left.

Hmm, I see. Glad to know the Junkie is a preferred method of communication.

Now, I just need to figure out the whole .swf problem I've been dealing with. Goddamn Flash can suck it.

Heh, today it is. I was out of town Fri/Sat/Sun camping, my boss is in meetings all day, and the other guy in my department is on vacation, so I'm getting the proverbial 20 pounds of shit stuffed into a 5 pound bag today.

Fun times. :p

So I flubbed the upgrade. Being a dumbass and not thinking ahead, I didn't back up the 2GB of music I had in Ubuntu that I didn't have in Windows. I also didn't back up my edited bookmarks or document the different add-ons in Firefox.

Now all I wanna do is retrieve the music and bookmarks, and then I'll just wipe the partition and re-install.
