I think 'Accidents Happen' does, and doesn't apply. Yeah, an unfortunate series of events occurred; however, that series of events would most likely have been avoided if the timelines weren't pushed, if safety checks weren't skipped, and if some regulations (i.e. you MUST be digging for XXX days before you can start getting oil, and you must spend XXX time drilling. There will be federal inspectors ON SITE, etc, etc)

You're right. I have no idea how I could have come to the conclusion that you're a Republican based on all of your nonpartisan posts.

Have you ever heard me argue about any typically Republican social issues?
Abortion? Same sex marriage? The war on Drugs?
You'd do yourself a favor to stop trying to categorize people or, at least, do it correctly.

When we have a cascading failure of government regulations, mandatory inspections and safety devices I fail to see how more regulations and inspections can fix that.
We've had the all powerful Federal government in charge of this mess for months are they're powerless to stop it.
Yet all I hear from you guys is government is the answer. Sorry, I don't get a warm fuzzy from that.

Cross, seriously, shut up and stop reading too far into things. Anti-this, pro-that; it's not that the problem is the government, the problem is that there are so many fucking rules and regulations written down; probably thousands of pages of text. THAT'S why people work to find loopholes; because there is so much room for interpretation. I didn't say to write more regulations, I said to PUT A MOTHERFUCKER ON THE RIG. Every rig should have a government rep (paid for by uncle sam, and responsible to the citizens of the united states) that is responsible for it. Hell, maybe even a TEAM of government reps.

We don't need more regulation, we need what already exists to be upheld. Judiciously.

Fine, you're right. Sorry for categorizing you.

I think it boils down to oversight. The regulations aren't the problems. The problem is that the regulations aren't followed. Obviously having safely regulations in place to keep problems from arising isn't the culprit but rather the failure to follow those regs. Like NY said, it's companies finding loop holes or even officials skirting around established regs that cause these problems. Not saying accidents don't happen when regs are followed to the letter but you're just asking for it if you don't follow them.

You may get hurt anyway if you fasten your seat belt before you drive but if you don't you're increasing that risk ten fold. If you get into an accident and don't have your belt on I certainly don't see how the "regulation" that says you need to put a belt on could be at fault. My example doesn't address all the ins and outs but you get my point.

I'm not a scientist but that does seem to have a shit ton of merit. It makes sense and seems a lot easier than a dome or similar devices.

BP seems intensely concentrated on collecting the oil rather than containing the spill.

At least that's the way it appears.
I've seen several simple solutions offered that seem plausible, but I doubt it would be tried if the net result isn't getting crude on a tanker.

This, times about a million. If they've got a cap on the pipe, why can't the bolt the cap on and then wrench it down?

Wow. That seems like a pretty clean fucking scenario to have to cap. WHAT THE FUCK is going on?! Seriously, create a collar that you can bolt around the junction of the two pipes. Have bolts on the collar that are a few feet long. Create a plug that you can then sequentially wrench down.

Maybe I'm giving BP too much credit here, but it seems like if there was a relatively easy and simple solution, they'd have done it. Yes, they may want too find a way to capture the oil being released, but I can't imagine that would be as cost-effective for them as just stopping the flow. They're on the hook for cleanup costs and I'd have to think it costs more to clean leaked oil from the ocean and shore than the $ they'd make from selling the oil after collecting, filtering, and refining it.

I'm down to about 108-109lb since surgery, which would be almost 13-15 lb since 2 weeks ago. I've been ideally wanting to get to 110 lb and my biggest challenge will be keeping it off once I can eat in full force again. Highly looking forward to that day.

I feel like one of those people who get those lap band surgeries and think they can get all the liquid removed from their stomach, but then start eating like a fatass again. That's gonna be me. I'm calling it.

Pretty sure you meant to post this in a different thread.
