Yea, PatGreen is right. They just have to file the necessary paperwork.

But not all non-profits get tax exemption on profits made. Getting breaks is one thing but being exempt from paying taxes is entirely different.

yes but nonprofits might pay their taxes but they certainly get all or more of them back at the end of the year. churches are probably viewed as a more permanent structure so they just don't way instead of putting all the money in the government bank account till april.

the nonprofit i work for has tax exemptions for every purchase and all the donations and stuff we get aren't taxed, even if we turn a profit.

Didn't know that. So does anyone agree with the church itself being tax exempt? We've talked about church non-profit business but what about the church itself or their workers?

why not? they're non profit and they provide a service to all people, should they choose to accept it. some of them can be pushy and offend some people with it, but overall, it's a service. and it's not like the workers get paid bank, the pastor from my church gets like 42k or something like that. yes there is free housing and phone, utilities, etc...but he cuts the grass and members that volunteer trim the plants and clean the garden etc. plus he almost has his doctorate. he's an educated man.

when things start being considered 'for profit' shit gets hazy. look at red cross, for example. only about 45% of your donations will get to where you want it to go. a nonprofit agency (i'm not entirely sure about this) will get about 90% of that there. you have to expect for some loss due to compensation to workers and transmission, etc.

edit to add: i'm not saying it this way cause i'm a christian, either. I'd say the same about buddhist temples and muslim mosques

The answer is complicated. Yes they do pay taxes on their income, but not all of it. Their are all kinds of little things set up that allow them to divide their money into expense categories and then individual categories are exempt such as housing. Kind of pisses off a guy who pays taxes on his military benefits of all things.
