and now there's a bill to say if you're born to ILLEGAL immigrants in the US (aka "Anchor Baby") you're not a US citizen, and you can GTFO with your parents.

This gets struck down FAST if it ever passes.

While I totally concede this is dead constitutionally, there's nothing in the constitution stating a state must issue a birth certificate to a person born to non-citizens.
The Federal government can recognize them as citizens...issue whatever documentation they want, there's no default responsibility on Arizona to do the same.

I think the Constitution should be changed to eliminate anchor baby citizenship. That would go a long way to solving some of these problems.

The term 'anchor baby' is bullshit anyways.

Say a couple is in the US illegally. They have a baby in a US hospital. The baby is now a US citizen, the parents still are not.

People say that the baby can then sponsor the parents for citizenship. They can.IN 21 YEARS. Not immediately.

Let's take a look, honestly, why the 14th amendment exists.

It was put in there to clean up Dread Scott and grant citizenship to freed slaves.
It was a solution for a problem that no longer exists.

It's not a universal practice for countries to grant birthright citizenship.

I don't totally disagree with you Ed.

However, if we're going to take that position, then the proper action would be a new constitutional amendment redefining citizenship. Until then, that's what the Constitution defines, so that's what we must do.

The fact of the matter is though that while the baby currently gets the rights of citizenship by being born here, the parents do not. That fact is commonly ignored when people are complaining about this.

I don't think people are confused about illegal parents getting citizenship, it just makes prosecution and deportation that much harder when their child is a citizen.

But look at the proposed law in this light: They want it to go to the supreme court. That's the point.
It's the exact same tactic being used by pro-marijuana and pro gay-marriage activists.

Pass a law at the state level that contradicts a Federal statute...get sued...appeal it all the way up.

I don't even worry about the parents...I know that's not a reasonable way to earn citizenship.

And Stu, you are apparently assuming that people such as me (that take a stance against illegal immigrants) think those people are not equal. That has nothing to do with it. I'm sure (well I know actually) that most of those people are hard working contributors to the world. They cause an economic strain on the country though...that's it. There's no need to go down the laudry list of problems that illegal immigration causes. Just don't make it out to be some cultural/race/hate issue. It is for some, but the real issues at hand are still there.

Their constitution limits or eliminates legal immigrants rights for property ownership, political participation, and employment opportunities. They can also force any foreigner to leave the country without any legal process.

The hypocrisy is plain as day.

Hard not to look at it as an issue of prejudice when boatloads of studies say that immigrants actually HELP the economy. It's just a fairly well accepted prejudice IMO.
