So all you guys have canned goods and water jugs stocked in the basement?

At the top of my list of 15 people I hate reading articles from - the person that drags out a small article into 7 pages.

Didnt read the article....way too long and Im waaaay too lazy, but any list of this nature should include "constantly jumping up and yelling OOOO!" everytime someone takes a shot on net, thinking its going in

The spouse one has to be worse. For the last game when the Hawks won it I had paused the game to finish some stuff and before I got back to it the wife had come home. She said that in class her teacher had mentioned the game. I immediately told her to stop talking...like seriously STFU kind of shit.

I said "Listen babe. You know so little about hockey that you won't even know you're about to say something that will ruin the game for me."

to which she replied "Well all I was gonna say is that you'll like it even more than normal because it went into extra rounds. Jeezus jerk!"

Displaced--you should have watched hockey with me, 'back in the day'. A bit of history--until meeting my new hubby in 2003, the last hockey game I watched was in 1980 televised from Lake Placid, NY (maybe you've heard of it?). So, I meet the man who will be my new hubby in 2003--and he's a hockey fan, except there's no hockey that year. And when it FINALLY comes back (04-05 maybe, I don't remember), they have 'pussified' hockey. (That would be the 'new rule changes')
So I say, okay...I'll give watching hockey a shot (I like football...it's a sport, how bad can it be?) Well, this one dude bounces another dude into the 'wall' and I'm screaming THAT WAS MEAN! HE NEEDS A "MEANNESS PENALTY"!! 2 minutes for meanness!
Hubby---there is no 'meanness penalty'...it's hockey.
Me--But if he's after the puck, why smush the guy into the wall?
Hubby--They are "BOARDS", not "walls"
Me--But that guy just hit the other guy with his stick, how come that's not a penalty?
Hubby--Ref didn't see it..can't call what you can't see
Me--but he SAW him knock the guy into the wall (boards, whatever)...where the penalty for that?
Hubby--it was a clean hit...no penalty
Me--But it was MEAN!!!

and so it went for almost a full season! My hubby is a patient man, and I got it after a while! But I'm thinking that first season after the lock-out must have been REALLY challenging for him! LOL

That's why I said I'd never date another hockey non-fan.

Oh I put up with her questions, and have got her to the point where she bitches about missed calls, spots an offsides and the like but that's just rule talk. She has no passion for the game or that deeper understanding of being considerably over connected to a sports club. She just couldn't help herself that time. I mean I was straight up telling her to shut up, stop talking, please for the love of christ talk about shopping instead....but no, she just couldn't fucking help herself. She's done that before to. During games in the regular season I would be at school and DVR them and when I got home she'd say something like "Your cousin just posted on facebook that the refs were complete morons and she's pissed at the game." which translates into "Sabres lost and you'll be pissed if you waste your time watching the game". I just wish I could get advanced copies of Grey's Anatomy episodes and blurt out the endings all the time.

Look for sites that snag copies of the scripts or get pirated episodes before they air :D

The figure out what the fuck's going on in the last ten minutes, it gets really tense and emotional, and then once every five or six times the person dies to keep it real.

Isn't that about how every medical/crime/lawyer/star trek/tv drama in general ends?

My girlfriend knows not to bother me when I'm watching sports. She understands hockey thankfully, but once in a while she'll ask me something dumb during a football game. Thankfully there's 20 minutes between plays so I can explain it. :p

I only put up with explaining the game during a game once. Sabres / Bruins , sitting in a box, trying to explain offsides during overtime. Freaking torture. The only reason I didn't throw her over the wall was I was guaranteed to get some and she was hot.

Well, I'm not hot...so that couldn't be it! LOL
He DID turn me into a bigger hockey fan than he is now. All it took was one televised Sabres game. Probably the 2005-2006 seeason (not sure anymore). He was flipping thru channels upstairs before going to bed (yeah, tv is more the 'norm' than sex now...happens when you get old! LOL) and I saw a hockey game on and said 'oh, we can watch this'.
Hubby--oh, it's the Sabres...they suck, we can watch them lose.
me--(about 10 minutes into the game)...ummmm, the Sabres are really fast, and they have a higher score than the other team...are you SURE they suck?
Hubby--well, they USED to suck!
Me--who is #61? He's kinda cute!! And zippy!
Hubby--Listen to Jennerette, he'll tell ya.
Me--hey I can get used to watching these guys!

And--thus...now I'm am massively hooked. Hubby's team is the Devils, but if they are playing and losing (badly) he will turn off the tv. I cannot fathom WHY you would turn off the tv while your team is playing, but whatever. I even talked him into getting Center Ice last season (so I had hockey to watch when the Sabres AREN'T playing).

Maybe patience is the key.

Well, I was referring to the whole "being a Devils fan" thing.

ohhh---see, we're near Albany, which was (and is again!) home to the AHL River Rats...which was NJ farm team. So...he would watch 'the kids' play in Albany, and then occasionally see them with "The Big Team". We are talking in the 1990's (wayyy before me!)

I had to explain to him early on that as a Christian, I had a really hard time rooting for the Devils...It just doesn't feel comfortable to me...and they aren't that exciting to watch (although Parise and 'the kids' are changing my opinion on that). He scoffed---and warned me one night that there was a guy playing on the other team name "shay-tan"...except his jersey says SATAN...and I just cannot cheer for anyone named SATAN...sorry!!!

Which is why I was glad to have tripped over this other game...with these guys wearing swords on their jerseys!

And now we will have the Albany Devils playing---which is good for me, because I didn't want to root for Carolina's AHL team. That didn't feel 'right' either!

I went to the Flames games this season with a friend from elementary school who is a Sabres fan, but didn't know hockey all that well. I was bracing myself for hours of obnoxious questions, but she picked up probably 80% of stuff simply by watching and a lot of her questions were just to confirm things she'd already figured out.
