That wasn't such a steal IMO. Wideman is better than any d-man in Buffalo aside from Myers and Rivet. The 15th pick is a pretty stout offer, and a 3rd rd in 2011 matches Campbell's value.

Essentially is was Horton for Wideman and the 15th overall pick. Could Buffalo match with a d-man like Wideman and the 15th pick? Buffalo could've matched with a forward, but not quite the draft pick. Best I can think of is Stafford, the 23rd pick and one of the 3rd rd picks for Horton. It looks like that Florida wanted a d-man instead though. They are short on the blue line and Buffalo isn't deep on starting quality d-men right now, and Tallinder and Lydman don't help as UFAs.

I think Florida wanted a d-man and to stock up on draft picks for a rebuild, and Boston had a good draft pick to spare.

Well yes. I should've clarified that what I meant was they have a slew of players who were very important to them last season. They've got RFAs they have to qualify (Wheeler, Stuart, Sobotka) as well as UFAs that are probably expecting a raise or at least what they earned last season (Recchi, Begin, Boychuk).

In the end, they're gonna need to trade a few more players out, IMO.

And I don't know why you even post here. If you want to bitch at someone, bitch at Tallon for wanting a top four d-man (for them anyway) and a very good 1st rd pick to start a cheap rebuild. Some stories said Tallon wanted a top forward (particularly a center), but quite obviously he wanted a d-man more. That makes sense since Florida only had four starting quality d-men under contract. Montador, Butler, and Sekera aren't nearly as good as Wideman. Rivet is better overall, but they are different d-men and Rivet is on his last contract year while Wideman has two left. After that there's Myers and everyone in the universe (I hope) agrees that he's off limits.

Bottom line is that it takes two GMs to work out a trade based on what each GM wants. Darcy could have been ready to offer better value, but if it's not what Tallon wanted it just plain doesn't f-ing matter. I'm tired of the whine-fests about "do-nothing Darcy", because I've yet to see anybody make a valid dissention that compares traded players to what Darcy could've offered or analize salary cap factors. You come off sounding like a truly great playstation GM wizard.

I was surprised Florida went for a d-man. Seemed like they have a good core this year with McCabe, Ballard, and Kulikov.

While thats a good start, Horton was all but written off in Florida and adding a player like Wideman and bringing in a decent player with the 15th overall pick seems like a good move to me. Not to mention you can never have enough quality D-men in this league....as Sabres fans found out in the Carolina series

Look like we'll be seeing quite a few more Kaleta and Horton rivalries in the coming seasons.

Just heard on Roger Sportsnet that Boston might be willing to get two picks in the top 5 in the draft on Friday, pure speculation though

Quote:
By landing Nathan Horton, the Boston Bruins had to punch a hole in their blueline by including defenceman Dennis Wideman in the deal with the Florida Panthers. This move has sparked speculation that the Bruins may not be done - and some believe Boston may now zero in on Toronto's Tomas Kaberle.

Now Leafs GM Brian Burke and Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli thought they had a trade involving Kaberle and Phil Kessel at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, but the deal was scuttled over confusion as to whether or not draft picks would be included.

Burke has publicly stated he wants a scoring winger as compensation for Kaberle, but according to league sources, star centre Marc Savard is available.

Boston and Toronto have yet to re-open talks involving Kaberle, but it's likely the Bruins will express interest and if Savard is in play, why wouldn't the Maple Leafs consider reuniting him with Phil Kessel?

A Savard for Kaberle deal would make sense, especially if the Bruins get Seguin at 2.

From Lebrun at ESPN.com...

Panthers start making moves
Florida GM Dale Tallon began his shakeup of the Panthers by moving underperforming yet undeniably talented forward Nathan Horton to the Boston Bruins in a deal that netted the Panthers, impressively, the 15th overall pick and top-four blueliner Dennis Wideman.

Tallon had promised us change and delivered quickly. He really likes Wideman, but nabbing the 15th overall pick was huge.

"That was the key to it," Tallon told us Tuesday night. "We had offers of good players but no picks, and other offers of picks but no players. So this was the right mix and the right offer. ... Having five picks in the first 50 [Friday and Saturday] is pretty exciting."

Tallon said a dozen teams inquired about the 25-year-old Horton, a list that dwindled to "three or four'' really serious bidders. And the Horton deal won't be the last this summer.

"Nine years out of the playoffs -- we're far from done with our work here," Tallon said. "We'll talk more with teams in L.A."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So if (probably imo) Buffalo was one of the 3-4 serious teams in the mix for Horton, Darcy was offering either players only or draft picks only. I have to believe that Regier would've offered players only, in order to make cap room for Horton and to keep the priority of building through the draft in place.

I assume Booth is one of the few players off limits?

Yeah and no one would really want him now with the concussions anyways so he'll be they for the rest of his career.

I know he doesn't really fill the need for a larger body at center, but I'd really like to see us take a shot at Stephen Weiss if they'd move him.
