They are differen't phones. Form factors are just as important to buyers as what they do.

Just as an example, some people perfer having a fixed keyboard rather than touch screen, which is one of many factors that makes each RIM handset different from another.

The premise behind a SERIES of phones remains the same... form and function, with new features and better performance.

That's why when I play that numbers game, I throw the iPhone against the Storm or the Droid, which have remained the same handsets with added features and performance increases.

Apple isn't trying to make multiple phones to appease everyone. They're trying to make 1 phone that works so well it appeals to the majority.

That's part of the reason why the iPhone is so great. It's an only child.

heh...I'm certainly not hating on Apple..I'm typing this on a new MacBook Pro.
It's just you asserted apple makes the most popular smart phone...let's throw out the notion of "versions" and just stick with general platforms.
I'd argue the blackberry is the most successful smart phone platform (and has been for almost a decade).
That isn't taking anything away from the iPhone, it's just what the numbers bare out.

You can reasonably say Apple didn't even try to attack RIM's market share until the second version when they added enterprise (exchange) support.
