You make a good point but if Briere and Drury were given offers way before they hit free agency they wouldn't of gotten as much. Just my opinion. Those two should have been locked up before the last year of their contract.

you know of course, except for the little rule that says contracts may only be negoiated during the last year they are valid

If he can't, we must have him high on our list.

That there is some high quality cynicism.

I would definitely kick the tires of Gagne, see what kind of a deal you can make.

If Regier re-signed Tallinder people would be saying, "Good, we needed to keep at least one of them". Leopold is THE SAME player as Tallinder, but he's younger and his market value isn't as high. If Tallinder didn't luck out by playing with Myers and Leopold didn't get his head crushed at the end of the season people would be convinced this was an upgrade. It's not an upgrade or a downgrade, it's a simple replacement...for a little less than what Tallinder got.

The summer isn't over and Buffalo will still have cap space after qualifying offers to RFAs and signing a back-up goalie. If Golisano chooses to spend any of that cap room there will be more moves, but that could take weeks. We have to wait and see how the UFA market pans out before many trades happen.

As would I. Not sure what they would want in return, any ideas gang?

From the Buffalo News...

"I’m excited. Right when I found out Buffalo was interested, I talked to Tommy Vanek, gave him a call, and my wife talked to his wife, we talked about the area. I’ve got three kids, and it’s one of those spots I really don’t know much about, but he filled me in and I was real excited and intrigued after that. I’m looking for a spot that’s good for the family, and my kids have fun while we go out and strive for goals.

"I think you look at it, they’re a playoff team every year. Goaltending-wise, they’ve got one of the best goaltenders in the league. Defense, the young defenseman Myers there, he’s an up-and-coming attraction and definitely a top player in the league already at a young age. I can hopefully complement him a little bit. We’ve got some good-scoring forwards. I think it was the whole package for myself, my family, hockey – for what I was looking for, Buffalo was a good spot for me."

On his power-play status, which didn't come into play in Florida or Pittsburgh last season: "I was more of a secondary guy in both spots. I didn’t see a lot of first power-play time, but who knows? All those things are earned through training camp and through the year. Who knows where they see me on that, but if called upon I definitely feel I can contribute somewhat."

On anything else Vanek told him: "He told me the wings are really good there."

On going from Florida to Pittsburgh and Buffalo: "It’s important to play in a market that sees hockey as a No. 1 game. ... To be in a market where people see hockey as a headliner is nice. It is refreshing, and I think my kids enjoy it more than anything."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

...The comment about complimenting Myers indicates that they'll be paired together, which would make the most sense.

TOMMY VANEK WOOT WOOT!
I like Leopold more now because he complimented us so much =]

Correct.

What did us in with Drury and Briere was our stupid policy that we don't deal with pending free agents throughout the season. It made them feel like we didn't want them.

Leopold is a more offensive and smarter Montador. He has a better shot. It's just not good enough. It's just not.

to be honest, tallinder wasnt the one to keep, to me. my biggest issue with leopold signing, was for 3 million for 3 years we could have kept lydman. it almost seems more like a panic move by darcy than anything else. i mean, what did leopold do to deserve a 1+ mil raise?

weber will give you a hell of a lot more penalty minutes than lydman did, though. webs got a temper he can't totally control. which i think is can be a GREAT thing for this organization

I don't hate Leopold at all but I'm with you I really don't think he deserved a 1.25 million a raise after his season was ended by I think his 3rd concussion. I just think Buffalo had options to upgrade their Defense by bringing in one more solid defenseman and then have Weber, Sekera, Butler and Grag's fight it out for the last one or two spots. We will see what Curly, Lary and Moe have up their sleeve.

That was my initial reaction too, but the more I think about it. Leopold has a greater o-zone upside, and he's 3 years younger.
