I don't see the blueline being much weaker with Weber and Leopold being added in... is it ideal, no, Id like to see one more top 4 D-man added, BUT they might NOT be there AND Weber could turn into that! So the blueline loses a notch in experience BUT gains in youth and energy! Call it a wash...
I'm gonna just go ahead and say it now. Mike Weber is going to be the second coming of Jay McKee, an all around gritty, tough defensive man that likes to block shots, but will have some injury problems.
That being said; he's going to be on our top pairing by the end of the year next year. He's shown he's got work ethic, drive, and character, all the things you could ever ask for in a defensive man. I liked it when he was drafted (57th overall) and I am happy he's finally going to get a shot in the NHL. He's been very good when he's played with the Sabres, and he's shown me nothing but the ability to play his style of stay at home defense.
He's also a guy that stands up for his team, and his teammates, he's not gonna roll over and back down. I loved Hank and Lydman, but neither guy was much of a fighter, and neither guy really ever dropped em. Weber adds that as well. Granted, he's not an enforcer, but he's not a push over either.
Mike Weber is exactly what this team needs, but for financial reasons, and development reasons he was kept down in the AHL last year. You guys are really going to fall in love with this kid.

That's cool, he is another important part to the puzzle.

It may be superficial, but I love that he's a rust belt kid, born and raised in Pittsburgh. Rust belt folk have a certain toughness that comes from the surroundings.

There may be something too that, even though I'm 15 years older then Weber I am a easily caught up in the competition as are many others. Back in the mid-90's I managed a dek-hockey center and very rarely would a day go by when there wasn't a fight or something worse. Most Pittsburgh kids just want to have fun but for whatever reason once the blood starts pumping they get swept away. I still see it today, I recently participated in a charity tournament (just sneakers) with mostly dude 15-20 years younger than me and I remember saying to myself before the games started, "this is for fun, for the Lemieux foundation, you have a ton of work to do tomorrow, take it easy and just get some exercise". Next thing you know I'm playing like a mad man in 90 degree heat diving all over the place getting elbowed in the nose getting slashed in the arms while I went down to black a shot, and I even got into an intense shoving match while trying to hold the line with a fat kid! lol
I suspect a lot of towns are like that. A lot of guys just like to work hard and play hard and it's what makes America special, Pittsburgh is certainly no exception and I'm sure the same can be said for great hockey towns like Buffalo and Detroit to name a few.
I do feel a great sense of pride anytime a Pittsburgh kid gets drafted, I'll be following Webers career closely.

It's too bad you missed his phenomenal call-up in 07/08. Injuries forced him and Andrei Sekera into the line-up during the stretch run to the playoffs, and they dominated top lines together.

I did miss that. But there will be more to come!

Seriously, what the hell happened to THAT Sekera? I miss him

For real! He had a vaporous shot and showed no fear carrying the puck.
I didn't think Reggie was that bad after the Olympics.
I've also heard that he's training with his Slovakian comrades this summer. Nothing makes me smile more than to know he's fine tuning his game, and I expect he'll be very good next season.
(I'm strangely optimistic today aren't I?)

Maybe he can go back to being a good puck mover... It's his last chance.

Yea, he led the team in +/- in only 20 or so games. I was really hoping he would get his shot last year, but it's too bad he had injury troubles the last two years which kept him out.
