I've been looking at scooters a lot lately cuz I'm probably gonna get one when it's time to re-motorize myself. I'm probably gonna stay away from Vespa because they're cost prohibitive (although, an 80mph moped sounds badass, even if it's close to $7K), but thankfully there's a ton of options out there.

Any one of you Junkies own one, have ever owned one, or just plain ridden one? Looking for experiences and thoughts here.

One of my buddies has a Honda Big Ruckus...it's a 1/2 motorcycle, 1/2 scooter utility thing...I've ridden it and I liked it a lot.
I considered getting one for commuting actually.

It looks like they don't make the "big" Ruckus anymore, just the Ruckus
http://powersports.honda.com/2011/ruckus.aspx

Great little thing for getting around a city without looking like a hipster vespa riding douche.

Yea, the little Ruckus is all they make of that series now. I am looking at some of the cooler and cheaper Vespa-inspired designs for sure, and I'm also looking at this bad S.O.B.:

It's a bad bad little bike.

Oooo...that does look pretty sweet.

One of my friends from college is huge into the import scooter scene...
This is what he has:

It's an Italian manufacturer called Lambretta.

BTW, yes, my friend does fit my definition of "hipster vespa riding douche" ;)

Yea, I like the Vespa-inspired style, but Vespa these days either offers their cheap models in lame colors or their cool models for ridiculous prices.

wow, that actually looks pretty badass for a moped/whatever its called. What are the specs on it, does something like that need to be registered?

Why don't you just get a motorcycle? In all seriousness, they are much safer because they can actually go the speed limit. I see mopeds from people who have lot their licenses around here and they are just dangerous.

And you can find a used Sportster or some sort of bike for under 5K easily, and you won't regret it.

Unless you can't get a license, but I thought you needed a license in New York to ride any sort of Moped and bike. I just know in NC you don't need a license to ride mopeds around because they can't go the speed limit.

A moped costs between $1,300 and $1,900 (Vespas, of course, can cost as much as a used hog). A used Harley can cost as little as $6,000 and a brand new one could cost upwards of $10,000. See what I'm getting at here when I talk about cost prohibivity?

Actually, I am considering that. A nice cruiser with a top box on the back is looking attractive to me, trust me.

Don't get a used Harley, get a used Honda or used something else.

http://buffalo.craigslist.org/mcy/1825895931.html older 750 Ninja for $2400
http://buffalo.craigslist.org/mcy/1825581486.html 97 Virago 535 for 2K
http://buffalo.craigslist.org/mcy/1825225332.html Another older Ninja 500 for 2K
http://buffalo.craigslist.org/mcy/1825070415.html Old 79 Bike for 2850

Those were just on the Sunday posts. Get a moped or scooter if you want, but for maybe a grand or 2 more, you get something that you could ride the speed limit on and wouldn't have to leave an extra 30-40 minutes to get some place. Plus you'd be safer because cars would not have to pass you on the back country roads because you can only go 30.

I know you're a bigger man so a Moped would be a struggle for it's 50-100CC engine to really handle you. You could get a 250 for around the same price as a moped and even though that would still be sluggish, you'd at least be able to go the speed limit.

Me personally am against owning a scooter because of the danger factor, it's different depending on where you live too, if you live in a suburb or the city then go for it because it wouldn't be as bad or dangerous as where I live and all these country roads.

My played on the 50cc ruckus... and they are a blast... only go about 45... and you have to watch big hills but they are an absolute blast...

I also have one of these.. its not a sport bike, more upright.... its also a V twin that sounds BADASS with a pipe on it... is nimble, quick, FUN and you can find them all day long for around $3000.... and don't get it confused with the SV650S

http://www.crazedlist.org/index.cgi?are ... mit=Search

Here is what I am talking about... SV650 is the top bike, upright bars, naked version.... the lower bike is an SV650S... front faring... clip-ons... etc...

http://www.crazedlist.org/index.cgi?are ... mit=Search

just another example... they are out there ...

the Ruckus 50cc... in camo... if the link doesn't work (because it's from craizedlist) you can find this on on the buffalo craigslist.... and I pasted the other ads below and what cities they are in so you can at least look... but for the money, you can NOT go wrong with an SV650
