I wanted John Madden, and instead Darcy goes out and signs a younger (by one year), bigger (to the tune of three inches and 20 pounds), more productive (130 more points, albeit in 300+ more games) version for likely cheaper than he would have gotten Madden. Great signing.

Madden has more cups though, I don't mind the signing but really how many third liners can on team have????

Well, given that McCormick and (when he re-signs) Kaleta will both be going to the 4th line, I'd say three - Goose, Nieds, and Grier. Sounds about right.

And that's being generous to Goose, assuming he's on the third line.

This team needed a third line center and veteran leadership badly. Which means Goose is Center for the fourth line where he should be. I don't hate Goose at all and he gives 100% most nights but lets face it he's a horrible skater.

Teaming him with Grier could make the guys that are supposed to produce...produce

I think the signing in itself isn't that impressive, but what it does to the lineup could pay dividends, that is in forcing Gaustad to the fourth line (giving us a very productive line of McCormick - Gaustad - Kaleta) and forcing Ellis and Mair out of the lineup.

I think Madden is still a lot better, but Neidermayer is going to be a great asset for the team next season for sure. What I like most is the leadership. He's not going to lead with goals but he's goign to bring his best game all the time and do what he does to the best of his ability. And he's going to back check hard. I'm hoping that this young impressionable team will start to think like him and less like Roy.

AND most likely playing on a line with Grier and Kennedy.....talk about moderate skill, but grit for days.....that might end up being my fav line by the end of this season if it falls that way

I also think we could use a scorer up front but what is to happen with Gerbe. I have no problem with buffalo getting rid of Stafford but I believe is his trade value is low right now. Plus I wouldn't mind seeing what Gerbe brings to the table this season. To me this is his make or break year. The guy is capable of playing in the NHL it just depends on what team he is on. If Buffalo keeps him or moves him.

I want so badly to like Gerbe, but I think our best idea is to move him and get value asap.....something tells me that this kids career, in spite of his amazing work ethic and character, just doesn't fit in in the NHL and it DEF does not fit in on a team where we're literally hemorrhaging midget skill players........

That's not his style really. Anyway, I think people have an overly critical view of the top six. They have produced at a fair rate to their contracts compared to the rest of the league. Let me be a stat geek for a minute...

The players listed above all have a cap hit of at least 4 mil, and all scored under 70 pts. Right now there are 81 forwards that will have a cap hit of 4 mil or above next season, and only 26 of them scored over 70 pts. 55 forwards that have a cap hit over 4 mil scored less than 70 pts, so Connolly, Roy, Pominville and Vanek are in good company.

Taking it a step further, since Connolly and Roy seem to take the brunt of criticism... Only seven teams had top two centers that scored more pts than Connolly and Roy. Connolly and Roy equaled Toews and Sharp, were just behind Datsyuk and Zetterberg, and actually beat Richards and Carter.

The top six can use a physical scorer and some leadership qualities, but they are solid in point production. Dumping any of those four for leadership or physicality without replacing the talent and point production won't go very far.

That's good stuff. I'm not saying they are without hope, just that they need to produce more. I'd like to see a healthy Connolly break 80 points. Roy 80. Vanek 80. and Poms 70. I think that's well within their talents , money aside.

I think a lot of the criticism is coming from the poor playoff performance. It's fresh in our memories stil.

I equate the 'Left Handed Mike Grier' to the 'Western Grip Hand Job'.
