:o :o :o :o Just please, for my sanity...at least watch all the movies and read the 6th and 7th books...please. I have this thing...it drives me crazy that I know 1000's and 1000's of pages of a whole story..it's like a different world, and it feels like you are living it; and I really want other people to feel the same way. I've converted a lot of people to read all the HP books who haven't read them before....all of them loved it ;)

The sheer number of things that tie together is unbelievable. She must have notes miles long. Not to mention proofing and editing 800 page novels. Blech.

Some people just don't wanna devote the time and energy to an epic. Me, I've read The Hobbit, LOTR, The Silmarillion, the first volumes of Tales of Middle Earth, and The House of Tom Bombadil, but some people just don't wanna put that much effort in lol.

they're one and the same. winos will tell you 99% of people don't like a certain type because they're not refined, but really, it's because it's a shitty wine. if people don't drink it, it's not good.

if people don't like to read it, it's not good literature.

The last book in the series I read was Goblet of Fire

This is where we have a difference in taste. I like to read novels that challenge me and I understand that not everyone else does.

So then is the opposite true, thus making Twilight good literature?

if that many people read it, it's a good book. not everyone may like it, and that's fine. i personally don't like any media with vampires.

I agree that if she's selling 100M copies, she's doing something right, but I still think good literature and good story can be mutually exclusive.

Stephanie Meyer writes like a lonely teenage girl. That's her core demographic. Surprised?

And Pat, might I suggest I Am Legend by Richard Matheson and Necroscope by Robert Lumley.

read them years ago. vampires aren't my thing.

i also don't consider I Am Legend a vampire book. it's about a dude's strggle to survive with vampires attacking. very little is done with the classic vampire thing. it makes more sense in my head.

the main character's description is hilarious. hardly any work is done developing bella's character because then every fat, stupid, teenage girl can be like...."OMG I AM SO BELLA WHERE IS MY ROBERT PATTINSON!!!!"

That's kind of what writing is though. In fact, the movie Inception, the "architects" are exactly like writers. You have to build the levels, but allow your reader to fill in the details.

When I write short stories, I will sometimes not name any of the characters. It encourages the reader to develop their own sense of the character rather than assuming anything based on the name.

i disagree. some books are like that. but her character is NEVER developed. harry potter is developed fully every book and updated every book. cotton malone (author steve berry) is fully developed. robert langdon and rachel sexton (dan brown)are fully developed.

it's one thing to not name a character, but to attempt to avoid blatantly stating personality characteristics and fully insert yourself into the main character's point of view isn't all that common. it's like a first person shooter vs a third person shooter in video games.

Well each writer, and even each work finds a different balance. I have stories where I've included plans and drawings because I wanted things to be concrete and others where I've been purposefully vague.
