Mikko Koivu just got signed to a seven-year (remember this) contract extension by the Minnesota Wild that doesn't kick in until July 1st, 2011.

What are his career stats? Let's break them down per season.
05/06: 6g, 15a, 40PIMS (rookie season)
06/07: 20g, 34a, 58PIMS
07/08: 11g, 31a, 42PIMS
08/09: 20g, 47a, 66PIMS
09/10: 22g, 49a, 50PIMS

What's his new deal worth? $47.25M total and it includes a NMC. Let's break it down by year.
11/12: $7.29M ($1.89M bonus)
12/13: $5.4M
13/14: $7.29M ($1.89M bonus)
14/15: $5.4M
15/16: $7.29M ($1.89M bonus)
16/17: $5.4M
17/18: $9.18M ($1.89M bonus)

He was probably going to make more money as a UFA in the open market so i think it's a good move. My original reaction was "wow" just like you im assuming, but seeing how most post-CBA free agent centers got paid by the buckets, you knew Koivu would too. Scott Gomez, Chris Drury and Daniel Briere all got over paid. Koivu is entering his prime just as his contract is going to be kicking in.

He's only gotten better every year, but he doesn't deserve an annual cap hit of almost 7 million a year, and for 70 points so far. This deal makes the Pominville deal look amazing for the same quality player basically.

It's not the money, well it kind of is. Look at how his deal is structured. $9.18M in the final year of his deal? Ridiculous!

Well, he's also their captain. I'm sure that has some play into it.

This contract, is the cap eras Holik contract.

Hey Wild fans, have fun never winning a Cup for at least 5 more years.

I'm racking my brain trying to figure out the point of going back and forth between high and way too farking high annual salaries. I would think the last year of 9+ mil is a carrot dangling to keep him productive and healthy, but he would get that money as long as he wasn't dead (basically) by age 34.

I don't think he'd get that money as a UFA next summer, but Fletcher has an offensively strapped roster and desperately wanted to keep the best player they have. He overpaid to keep him, and with a different coach than Lemaire and a few talented wingers, Koivu could be a pt/game player for at least the next 3-4 years. It's a strange looking contract, but it might be somewhere close to fair by the time it's done.

Possibly, if it wasn't structured the way it is, and was for 5 million or even 5.5 million I'd say at first the deal may be too much but it would be perfect by the end of it.

Haha great minds think a like! Especially when looking down upon insanity. You know, it's been what...15 years since the Holik deal? It makes no sense today, as it did back then. Just like the soon to become legendary Koivu deal. I mean, wow...this will NEVER make sense.

Chuck Fletcher should seriously hit him self in the head with something. Mikko Koivu has done squat since he came into the NHL and he's getting 47.25 mil over 7 years?? Now we will probably see other mediocre players wanting this kind of money.

I'd say 71 points last year is doing something.

He's only increased his production every year, but not for 7 million he doesn't deserve. If it was for 5 million or less he would earn it, but not how it is now.

You need to read everything, I say it's way too much, and 71 points is his best so far and has only increased every year, so just shut up, you never look into everything about it.

I don't agree with his money value at all, but to say 71 points isn't doing something is pureply stupid, some players would love to be able to get 70 points a year.

Mikko is far from a mediocre player. I think they spent too much, but this guy is def worth more than Pominville to me, because I think he holds the potential to dominate a game(and raise the play and confidence of his teammates doing it). Mikko for 6 would be acceptable I guess, imo. His Olympic play is what impressed me most, I think. I think any guy who can appear to be the only guy out there is worth $6 million.
