Here’s an interesting article on term limits:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/07/19/ ... tml?hpt=T2

(quotes from article)
Alexander Hamilton spoke against limits, writing in Federalist Paper No. 72 that, "Nothing appears more plausible at first sight, nor more ill-founded upon close inspection."

Thomas Jefferson, however, said term limitation, at least of the president, was necessary "to prevent every danger which might arise to American freedom from continuing too long in office."

Personally, I don’t like the idea of term limits, because it limits the choice of the voters. Voters should be able to decide when someone’s been in office too long.

How do you feel about it?

Interesting topic. I haven't put much thought into it.

If I were asked to give an answer right now, I'd say I don't agree with them, except for maybe the office of President.

I'd have to think about it longer to give a good analytical answer.

Politicians are like diapers.
They need to be changed often, and for the same reason.

Imagine being stuck with Bush still. Without term limits, that could easily be the case right now.. <shivers>

That can go both ways. With no term limits, Clinton probably would have beaten Bush in 2000.

Oh we could be stuck with some senile hack like Robert Byrd in congress until he literally dies.

oh, wait.

I'm in favor of term limits.

The more often you change them over, the less likely you are to have them get bought out by a corporation or special interest. They can start voting what's right, rather than what gets them re-elected.

Who is to say that the corrupt politicians wouldn’t just become even more corrupt, since they would have less time to build their nest egg?

I would also counter that politicians in today’s world hit the ground running in terms of getting into bed with lobbyists, corporations and special interests. An elected Congressperson who hasn’t even been sworn in yet can be every bit as corrupt or “bought” as his/her multi-term peers.

This gets to campaign reform. The ability of corporations and lobbyists to finance campaigns seems practically unlimited (and just recently got even less limited). If I’m running for office and BP can only give me $2,000, as opposed to $2,000,000, then I’m not going to jeopardize votes by being a BP lackey. I don’t know that the current rules would allow a donation that big, but you get the idea.

I think most presidents spend their first term trying to get reelected, and then throwing caution to the wind their second term while making their "presidential footprint" so to speak.

I'm for a single 6 year term. After that, GTFO.

I would disagree...
Barack Obama hasn't stopped campaigning but that's pretty unique to him (I assume since that's all he knows how to do).
Bush didn't do that...Clinton didn't do that.

They didn't campaign so much as they tried to not piss anybody off; Bush was unique in that 9/11 happened so early in his first term.

He(they) were afraid of the President becoming "king-like". I doubt any of them would deem it necessary now, as monarchy is now a running joke. Personally, I think term limits are retarded, and against the American way. Having the right to vote for a guy who isn't as good as a guy you can't vote for is a shit system. It's like having to play your back-up goalie even though your starter is healthy.

I would have to go against that. I would be inclined to say that Bush would have been out before 8 years.

lets just simplify things, and just elect a president for life

i mean, whats the difference, we already have life terms for the SCOTUS

while were at it, why not make the senate seats hereditary
i mean, its not like we dont have people serving for 20, 30+ years anyways ;)

ON a serious note, Big Business runs/ruins this country. Presidents are mere puppets/whores.

I'm not too up on campaign-ing, but I'm sure that the parties get "donations" from tons of people/businesses to support their 'causes'... If there's a way to eliminate the donations from companies and just elect presidents to one 8 year term I would be thrilled.

I would also add a clause that states if enough outrage about a current president can be cooked up, they kick the current guy out and have all parties just offer up another guy instead of having one party with two guys running that screws both of em.
