Just to show how absurd this is....

His cap hit is $5.9M. with these numbers.

It's ridiculous. These kind of deals undermine the whole salary cap principle. For long term contracts the cap hit should count regardless if the player still plays or not.

Edit: On the other hand Darcy should try to sign Myers for 25 years / 100mill before they change the rule.

So he will be 44 when his contact is up? 25 seasons is what they want him to play... Wtf.... good luck paying 4-6 years of a aging player.. Devils are like oh shit Marty is on his way out we need another person as a main stay or were fucked. This move is fucking dumb good luck devils seriously.

They will probably buy him out at some time or send him to the AHL or KHL and voila, you've got 10 years of Kovy for a 6M cap hit

Buying him out at any point may land them in cap jail. If you get a net savings by buying a player out, you have dead money on your cap for twice the remaining contract length.

Sending him to the AHL would be a way to open cap room, but they'd still have to pay him, assuming he reports and nobody claims him.

They can't sent him to the KHL, and he can't just say fuck the NHL and go play in Russia while still under contract here. The IIHF wouldn't give him a transfer, and he would then be ineligible for international competition.

A cap hit under 6 million, but for 17 years! Holy fucking insanity. Let's say he absolutely sucks at age 37, as in not even worth playing because he can barely muster 20 goals a season and he still hasn't learned how to play defense. So then the Devils buy him out, and have 1/2 of his contract hit the cap. That's roughly a 3 million cap burden for SEVEN YEARS. basically, you just cost your team a SOLID player on the payroll for 7 years.

The good thing for the Devils is that his cap hit is very manageable right now. Not a lot of consistent 40 goal scorers can be had for under 6m/year. Mostly because there are so few who can consistently do that.

Another amazing contract.

i think you're missing the point that it's only 17 years because they expect him to retire in like 10 years. that way, they pay a ton of money to him, but the cap hit dropped a ton.

i imagine he's getting 10-12 million a year for the first 6 or 7 years. then he retires, only sacrificing a few million cash a year, but the cap hit stays low, allowing the devils to sign more people.

it's conniving, not a great contract.

Capgeek has him at a $6M cap hit per year...until 2027.

It's a joke.

EDIT: Here's the terms.

Kovalchuk will earn $6 million each of the next two seasons, $11.5 million for the following five seasons, $10.5 million in the 2017-18 season, $8.5 million for the 2018-19 season, $6.5 million in 2019-20, $3.5 million in 2020-21, $750,000 the following season, and $550,000 for the final five years of the unprecedented deal.

This contract encapsulates everything that's wrong with the NHL's current salary cap. It's a mockery.

But isn't this contract signed so even if he retires it doesn't count against the cap when he does retire?

Or is that only a contract signed after the player is 35? Because if it's for a player under 35 and he retires that entire cap hit is off the books. It's one of those two, because the Pronger and Hossa deals are exactly like this deal, signed before a player truend 35 so later when they retire, the entire cap hit is gone when they finally do retire.

That's exactly why they do it. It's like the old trick in the NFL where a player would sign for years they would never play just so they could spread the signing bonus out over a longer term.

The problem is that they extend the contract so far out into those 'no way he plays' years that it dilutes the overall cap hit down well below what it should be.

Ok, just making sure. Because I knew it was you sign the contract over 35 you have to pay it out, or it counts against the cap hit no matter if they play or don't, but under 35, it's off the books when they retire.

I say He's with the team for 13 years before he retires. If not, only 10. 10 more years he'll be 37.
