The NHL has rejected Ilya Kovalchuk's 17-year, $102 million contract with the New Jersey Devils on the grounds that it circumvents the NHL's salary cap.

Details to follow….

They don't want this to set precedent, obviously

Is it too soon to start the Kovy to the Kings/Islanders/KHL/Miami Heat rumors?

Does anyone know the last time a contract was rejected in the NHL?

Well, Carl, LouLam had nothing to do with the money or terms - he made that clear during the presser today. He also said he thinks these deals are BS, and this was ownership's doing.

Some people think he was deflecting any backlash onto the ownership, but many think his comments were designed to sabotage a deal he wanted no part of (he's a hawk when it comes to his disdain for contracts ridiculous in length or money).

K thanks.
Also, does anyone have an answer to my earlier question about whether or not the NHL has voided a contract before?

heres some food for thought:

i was just looking up players, and i went, ya know who i like? rick dipietro. what a fantastic back up he would make if the sabres could trade for him. and if he gets good again, trade him for something awesome.

then it hit me.. oh yeah, his contract. nevermind.

poor dude will always be stuck because of that contract. dipietro is an out standing goalie, but hes always hurt, and his dumb contract.

Lou came out and said earlier last night/today this was an ownership move and his only input was whether or not the player would fit in to the system and team.....Lou WAS smarter than this.....

But as much as I fucking despise this contract and think its a joke and a disgrace to the league and the cap..........

In the Devils defense, Im not really seeing what the difference is between this deal and the Hossa/Zetterberg/Pronger contracts that were essentially designed the EXACT same way (albeit slightly less years) only one season ago.....Yeah, they exploited the same loophole a little more but thats like the league telling the Hawks/Wings/Flyers...

I know you guys all stole cars tonight..........but NJ, you drove the fastest.........so you go to jail......and all the rest of you boys can go home....have a nice night

It's bullcrap that the league is rejecting it, based on the idea that it's unrealistic for Kovy to be playing until he's 43.

I don't know how the NHL expects Hossa to play until he's 43, Savard until he's 41, Franzen until he's 41, Pronger until he's 42, and Zetterberg until he's 41.

The NHLPA will most likely file a grievance, and it's hard to see how they wouldn't win this one. There are already 5 precedented contracts in their favor.
