It's just an all around clusterfuck of massive proportions.

Apple designs and tests a new antenna system. (Can't say they didn't; they spent some good coin on those test chambers.) As usual, Jobs says 'it's the best ever', and the new antenna is a focal point of the presentation.

Before the phone is released, tech blogs in their never ending quest for pageviews discuss the antenna ad nauseum. There is plenty of speculation about how this new design will work in practice.

The phone comes out. Tech bloggers and their readers instantly start futzing with the antenna, and start raising holy hell when it dropped bars if touched a certain way. Of course, the general blogging public was too busy bashing the iPhone 4 to notice that people showed proof of other phones doing the same thing. Anyone who DID point that out was yelled down but the Apple bashers.

Apple then tries to blame the problem on the signal meters instead of admitting that certain areas of the phone will cause attenuation. This fuels more anti-Apple speculation that they're tweaking the meters to hide the problem or shift blame to AT&T.

The press conference was the right thing to do, just took em too long to get there. They should never have come out and said 'there is no problem'.

How is your signal to start with? It's generally less likely to happen when you have good sig to begin with. I can't make my 3GS move at work, but I'm two blocks from a tower here.

At home, it's not as good, so I can get it to drop a bar or two.

I can tell you AT&T is a complete dead zone in my house.

My verizon BB gets about 3 bars but iPhones need to use wifi or go outside.
I'm in the middle of the San Fernando valley, so it's not exactly BFE when it comes to coverage.

That much I can certainly blame on AT&T.

Around Buffalo, I don't have much of a problem. (WAAAY better than when I had Sprint.) Coverage is pretty comparable to Verizon around here.

In other cities, AT&T blows cock. Boston and New York are downright terrible. I don't know how anyone who lives there would buy an AT&T phone. In Boston, it wasn't just my iPhone either; my friend with his Crackberry Curve had just as bad a time last time I was there.

I've never had any problems with my crackberry curve in any place I've gone to.

My Curve has never dropped a call, BUT it did lose two bars when I placed my thumb where it was placed in the video with that Tour. SO, yes Blackberries do lost reception just like Apple.

The Droid X is a hot phone. There are reports of some smoked screens out there, but nothing too widespread.

It's biggest downside is that it's currently impossible to root like the first Droid. It's basically no different now than the iOS. You can't install any apps outside of the Android store, and you can't load custom software onto it. The phone simply won't load it. Of course, that will get cracked soon enough, but the biggest hook of Android is supposed to be that it's open and you can do what you want with it. Now that they've taken that away, it loses it's luster to a point.

Now the new operating system sucks on the iPhone 3g

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2010/07/28/ ... iphone-3g/

Maybe Steve Jobs should actually test the stuff out before releasing it

You're late to the party - the iOS v4 has sucked on the 3G and 3GS hardware from the start.

The Iphone 4 was specifically designed for the iOS4, and the 3G and 3Gs were not, it's not that hard to see why it doesn't work as well as they thought it would.

Those phones weren't designed for it.

iOS 4 runs perfectly fine on the 3GS. It's a problem on the 3G because that model has a significantly slower CPU and less RAM than the 3GS or 4.

3G 412MHz CPU, 128MB RAM
3GS 600MHz CPU , 256MB RAM
4 800MHz CPU, 521MB RAM

And it looks like the iPod touch was not not designed for it either. With my new new iPod touch 3g 32GB model the battery life is a complete joke. I might have to buy a external battery pack for it now.
