The polo club part may be true regarding the colors of the team, but the name "Sabres" itself was chosen as the winner of the naming contest because Seymour and Norty likened a saber to being strong both on the attack and on defense. Seymour even specifically spelled out S-A-B-R-E-S at the podium when he announced the name of the team.

I guess the reporter didn't really do his research since this was an article posted in the Sabres website on July 6th.

http://sabres.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=532255

Quote:
The name ‘Sabres’ had been suggested by not one, but four different people and appealed to the owners. As public relations director Chuck Barr wrote in a press release, “a sabre is renowned as a clean, sharp, decisive and penetrating weapon on offense, as well as a strong parrying weapon on defense.”

It's a phrase that basically means, if you wanna see the Sabres at the top, turn the rankings.
