... to a joint US-South Korea military exercise, scheduled to take place this weekend.

Are they all smoke and mirrors, or are we about to be stuck in a bad way?

The way I figure it, it we keep heading in the diplomatic direction we're heading, we're going to end up in some kind of military conflict with N. Korea (among others). I'd rather that happen sooner, before they end up with missiles capable of carrying nuclear munitions long range.

That being said, I'd much rather see us take a strong, principled stand against tyrants that might stave off the need for military action.

North Korea will threaten military action if someone from the US stops at a McDonalds in Seoul. It's all bullshit posturing. Kim Jong Il is not stupid. He says the shit he says and they do what they do because they know that nobody will do anything about it.

If North Korea ever initiated an attack, they would be steamrolled by joint US/South Korea forces. Absolutely crushed. Unlike the Korean War, I doubt that China would get involved again. Even Beijing is tired of the bullshit. They'll support a communist state, but North Korea has been well past communist, and into batshit fucking loopy for years.

Nothing changes until Kim Jong Il dies, and then we can only hope that his son who's in line isn't as much of a headcase as dad and gramps.

Either way, none of us will see a 'normal' North Korea in our lifetimes.

I'm not so sure China would take too kindly to a war on their boarder.

China got involved the first time because Gen. MacArthur didn't want to stop at the Chinese border; He wanted to continue into China to cut off North Korean supply lines.

Back then, the USSR and China had a vested interest in keeping North Korea under communist control. Now, that's not so true. The communist bloc wanted to setup another satellite state; they got a whack job dictator (Kim Il Sung) who didn't do what China and the USSR wanted.

If North Korea did anything that warranted being invaded, China would sign off on it as long as they were consulted about it it.

I know something has to be done eventually if North Korea keeps up the shenanigans but with about a dozen close friends stationed in Korea right now I'm hoping it's all just posturing.

Now they've elevated their threat to a nuclear one. Not good.

I don't think North Korea would have many allies if they initiated an attack. China wouldn't get involved, they make almost everything for the US.

Empty words.

If the North used a nuke, the entire civilized world would come down on them, and quickly.

North Korea would become a giant hole in the ocean, and South Korea would become an island nation.... The rest of the world would either build up their nukes or all dismantle them at the same time.

This may sound kinda sick, but coming from someone who is joining the Air Force, and going into what they call a "combat position" I'm kinda interested to see what happens here. I've always wanted to see Korea, maybe I'll get the chance to do a tour of both North and South Korea.

I'm so sick of N. Korea trying to act like a bully on the international stage, but never having to back their shit up due to diplomacy. Eventually you have to take a swing at that bully, and see if he's all talk, or if he wants to walk and back that shit up.
