Actually, any new contract you do unless you get a plan without any texting or anything. That's what people have been telling me.

But yea, I recommend a Droid as the sexy pick and a Blackberry as the businessy pick.

The X just came out, it looks pretty snazzy. I dunno much about Droids though, I stick to my RIM hardware.

If you don't buy a smartphone, you won't have to add on a data plan.

If you go on the website, the phones are broken out by category, should make it easy.

(If I had to pick, I'd get the Droid X. Great phone.)

Yeah, damn Verizon is making you get a $10 data plan with any 3G enabled phone (which is virtually all of them - nv3, etc).

Even though most people don't use those phones for data. I mean come on - if you're going to use a phone for that, you're going to get a smartphone.

They've changed that then. The multimedia phones didn't used to require the mini-data plan.

It's a provision they've added in the last year, Squanto.

Here's my chance to sound like an old grumpy person...

Don't waste money on a phone because you think you need to talk, text, or have i-net access on your hip everywhere you go. The only cell phone I have is a work phone that I don't pay for. If I didn't need to have it on for work purposes I would never have it on while off-duty. At home I have an internet phone service through VOIP. People probably never heard of that company because they don't advertise, and pass on that cost to customers. It costs me $200 on a two year contract for the equipment with free long-distance anywhere, call waiting, etc, etc. That works out to about $8/month.

Makes sense. My contract with VZ is on the wife's phone, and that's just coming up to the end of the 2 years, so they wouldn't have had that provision then.

What're your thoughts on my having a BlackBerry so I can keep in close touch with my fellow bloggers, track the news on Twitter wherever I go, and blog using my Wordpress app while I'm at a Sabres game?

And I am a little confused, are you saying "VOIP" is the name of a company, cuz it's only an acronym for "Voice Over IP".

I got a Samsung Intensity, and I didn't need a data plan for it. There's still a few phones that don't need data plans, but not many. But I like my phone. Works well, texting is awesome (since it has a keyboard), reception is pretty good, and phone calls are clear enough, though I don't honestly talk on the phone a lot. Pretty nifty phone.

Just a couple of months ago. It was a pain in the ass, because there were a few other phones that I liked but you had to get a data plan with it, which is bullshit. But there were 2 I narrowed it down to without a data plan. The Intensity, and the LG Cosmos. I went with the Intensity, mainly because the direction the keyboard slides out makes a lot more sense than the Cosmos did.

None of these phones need data plans.

Although I'm in IT and am run a VoiP phone system for our call center, I still think the residential offerings aren't that good. For starters, you're at the mercy of your ISP. If they go down, your phones go down. You're also at the mercy of connection quality. Transient network issues can blow up your ability to make a phone call, and your ISP won't give a shit if you call to complain. Secondly, 911 on VoiP service, while getting better, generally sucks, and that's a big concern for most.

It's going to be better in the future, but I wouldn't rely on it as primary phone service myself. Too many technical and systemic hurdles for my taste.
