Dropping those back end years under $1M was most likely their downfall. It's reasonable that a veteran over 40 would sign for $1M-$1.5M towards the end of their career, but not for $500k.

All they had to do was make a rule that states that annual salaries cannot exceed or diminish by more than 30% of the average annual salary over the length of the contract. There. Bloch, the arbitrator, included speech in his ruling that seems to imply the NHL may go after previously-registered contracts that are similar in structure to Kovalchuk's rejected deal. Pronger and Hossa would be the intended targets, I'd guess.
