This may sound dramatic, but this situation is a bit of an enigma. Drew needed a change of scenery a while ago, and it seems some teams were interested in him. So why didn't this take place? This isn't your daddy's league, and the change of scenery trades aren't near as prevalent, or did the Sabre management truly believe he was gonna be a late bloomer? This does sound like a story with something else behind it, but I'll leave the conspiracy theories to Mel Gibson.

I think Darcy likes to Hold on to his draft pics as long as possible, and go down with the ship.

True, we did get rental value (Zubrus) for him + our 1st rounder, which was 28th overall. The same day picked up 31st overall (Brennan) for Biron, so it worked out fine since the 3 players taken before don't seem like they'll amount to anything...

I thought Zubrus was a good gain for Novotny, but man the production wasn't really there. 4g, 4a, -3 for Zubrus, 0g, 6a, -2 for Novotny.

Zubrus was and is never worth the amount he received on the FA market though.

Yeah, no way in hell he's worth 4 million/year. And at the time it looked like a solid deal, he was over 50 points at the time of the deal.

On the bright side, we didn't end up losing anything at all (Novotny, 1 round pick (Traded to SJ))
