I've never argued that they shouldn't be allowed to build whatever they want.
They're protected just like any other entity under our constitution and laws.

What I am arguing, is they're being very insensitive and if their objective is to improve Muslim relations in this country they're going about it in just about the worst manner possible.

Maybe someone can explain that to them in very small Arabic words because they apparently haven't been blessed with common sense.

I'm sure he doesnt intend for the place to actually be viable, just a big fuck you to the 'cultural center', and a rather poetic one at that. Too bad there wont be a bunch of gay dudes gayin it up all over the place while they're trying to pray.

That would be hilarious. If I won the lottery I'd buy the property across the street and turn it into an all glass 24 hour gay bar......oh my god that would be great

the mosque is two blocks away from ground zero. there's already one that is four blocks away... what's the big deal? the date? women can't wear head scarves in france, now muslims can't build mosques and community centers within unspoken distances of certain sites.

it's a generalization. a generalization that is akin to those which are used to undermine and discredit other cultures and ethnic groups. the really disheartening detail of this entire debacle is that we, as humans, have gone from using time and dates to associate concepts involving language, history, and general cognitive development to using them for the establishment of contentment and unconscious bigotry.

Yeah, I kind of agree. I never really had an issue with the date or place. I don't think the intention is for the building to be a middle finger to the people of new york, the united states, or those who lost loved ones on september eleventh.

It's not a mosque. It's a cultural center.

The big problem with it is simply the date.

Yeah the date.
Do you find that fact inconsequential?

i'm aware of the circumstances surrounding the "predicament", and it is a community center, but there is also a mosque, to my understanding.

the idea that language is no longer forthright is a tragedy.

i find using it as a reason to complain a cop-out. it's no less humorous than someone pulling the race card to prevent someone from developing property, or a community center, in this case. either way, at least it gained the opening of the community center some publicity.

So why, when attempting to build stronger relations with the non-Muslim community, would they purposely choose a date that creates that reason to complain?
For fun and sport?
It defies logic.
The group building it are obviously not into PR or marketing.

Yeah, because I bet they'd have a problem drawing attention to lower Manhattan on September 11th otherwise.

I've said this over and over...it's not about the mosque / community center / whatever.
It's about respecting a special place on a special day.

Opening up a strip club or a friggin McDonalds on that day in that place would be in poor taste as well.

If you can't yield that point, I don't know what to say.

as long as they're not planning to open the doors at 9:03 a.m., then i can see no blatant disregard for the sanctity of the area. really, it's not even at ground zero. 2 blocks is quite a bit of distance in midtown manhattan.

Meh. It is being a bit insensitive, but I don't care.

Our President is still a god damned pussy

Quote:

Yeah he is. Still glad he beat out the alternative. And I continue to be with BaY on this one.

A couple hundred million people.

I actually think the President is right but he won't come out and say it.

I 100% back their right to build whatever the hell they want.
It's just about the dumbest thing they could possibly do under the guise of improving Islamic relations in this country, but it's their right!

Too many Americans think that Muslim = Al-Qaeda.

Remember, we have freedom of religion here, as long as it's one that we agree with. :(
