I'm in the Crosscheck camp on this one. I don't think legally we owe anyone anything (or at least, we shouldn't). But morally, in terms of charity, definitely.

I'm of the belief that we should help each other, but only to the point that you are actually helping them. Once you make the handouts too easy, then your not helping them at all. Welfare/unemployment until people are on their feet again, and contributing back to society is fine, imo. Giving them these benefits unchecked for too long probably makes them unwilling to work, and ends up hurting everyone. Human nature itself is filled with goodwill, I believe. I think most people would share food with others if it were scarce. Too bad this isn't true with other scarce items(such as money).

not only do i feel that the question is short-sighted, or perhaps just too vague, but i feel that a simple yes and no would be an inhuman reduction of the various causalities for a response to the question.

We do owe each other some things, but they don't need to be tangible. Moral support and courtesy, for example.
