ARLINGTON, VA - The Washington Capitals inked forward Tomas Fleischmann to a one-year contract on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old native of the Czech Republic notched career-highs with 23 goals, 28 assists and 51 points in 69 games for the Capitals last season. His regular season was cut short in March due to deep vein thrombosis in one of his legs.

A former second-round draft pick of Detroit in 2002, Fleischmann came to Washington in a February, 2004 deal for Robert Lang. In 260 NHL games, all for the Caps, he’s amassed 56 goals and 128 points, adding three goals and five points in 22 playoff contests.

Ok, so they were already 2.8 million over that cap before this signing. Giordano is as good as gone by July 2011...

?? Mistake?

Yeah but we can't sign anyone over our invisible self imposed cap, apparently 7m below the NHL cap. Bull. We could have snagged him if management had balls. I honestly don't think he'll be that good though without being on Washington.

fuck, my bad. For some reason I saw the "Calgary Sun", and just assumed it was the Flames. Smart. And yeah, I think Fleischmann benefits greatly from being on the Caps (stat wise)

Darryl Sutter is still an idiot, though...

They should think about trading him or say Semin for some much better defense.

Rumor has it they are thinking of trading him or David Steckel to make room for Eric Belanger's return.
