I was more generalizing.

Find me a community anywhere in the US, and start planning a mosque there. People will bitch and moan about it.

However, I will say that I don't hear many folks complaining about Muslims praying inside the Pentagon. Last I knew that was hit too.

Muslims are not the problem. Radical Islam is the problem.

Here's a thought experiment.

If you were the head of a major moderate Islamic group and you wanted to reach out to non-Islamic Americans to improve the perception of your religion, what's the very worst thing you could decide to do?

I'm putting "build a mosque near ground zero" in my top 3.

I guess it depends on perspective.

The easy thing is to cave to fearmongering anti-Muslim public perception and move the place far away.

The hard thing is to stand up for their religious freedoms as protected by our constitution and build it there.

Too many Americans forget that amongst our American brothers and sisters who died on those planes, some practiced Islam. One could argue that those folks deserve to have a place of worship from their faith close to where they perished.

We're never going to be accepting of Islam as a religion if those who practice it continually get badgered and harassed to keep away from 'real America'.

Noted right-wing bigot and Islamophobe Harry Reid believes the mosque should be built elsewhere.

Sure he did. The President waffled on the subject, some Repubs started trashing Reid because he wasn't commenting. So he commented.

I think the President had the right perspective on all this based on his initial comments. I agree with you that he pussed out and walked back on Saturday, and needlessly so. Even Fox News agreed with what he said on Friday.

I've been saying all along what the President got out with his waffle.

Yes they have a right.
No it's not wise.

Is someone here arguing that it's hallowed ground?

If you want to nitpick though, the reason that address is being rebuilt in the first place is because a landing gear from one of the planes fell through the roof of the previous building.

9/11 doesn't happen, the future mosque is still a Burlington Coat factory.

Please, I'd really like some answers to my little hypothetical. If you were the leader in charge of moderate Muslim outreach, what's the one thing you would do to piss people off the most (warranted or not)?

Well I didn't want to direct all of that specifically at you ;)

I just think this whole thing isn't so black and white.
Very few of the critics (from what I can see) are opposed to the mosque in and of itself.
(It's just the loudest ones.)

God damn though, I bet I'd get a tad bit of ugly resistance if I tried to open a Mormon temple in the Castro district of San Francisco.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

it is right though. 9/11 was religion based, yes. but the majority of that religion are not western style hating extremists. they just worship differently then we do. and thats fine with me. they can do it where ever, when ever to me. people can disagree with me if they want.

Rush Radio was talking about this yesterday in which I heard.

He said we have the right to build what we want for religons, and those people who oppose it have the right to protest it.

It will never end, it's just how it goes.

i meant it as more of a generalized parallel. i'd discuss this more, but i've become torn on the whole west bank/middle east issues lately. i'd rather walk the tight rope and not fall off the side whilst getting a brush-burned crotch from the friction.

The country would be so much better if we were all atheists under a socialist rule.

Yeah, Stalin and Hitler were really onto something with that combo.
