hitler wasn't a socialist. national socialism is not socialism, it is right wing nationalism prevailing under the guise of socialism. it's like libertarians who are purposefully align themselves with anti-authoritarians to confuse the general public about what they actually stand for, or to wreak havoc on the opposing political parties.

There's no way to achieve a socialist and atheist state (or their goals) without some measure of fascism.
That's the point.

It's been tried.

i will concede that point to you. however, there is no way to obtain any objective, including the american dream, without some measure of fascism.

Here's one area where I actually agree with President Obama (about the only one I can think of off the top of my head). Yes, they have every right to build their mosque there. And it's also a really stupid thing to do. Unless, of course, it's a deliberate thumbing of their noses. Then it makes complete sense.

These people are asking for some crazy, wacko, radical Christian Group to bomb this fucking place. It's exactly what they want and why they're doing it. To incite people, plain and fucking goddamn simple. If it was really about "bringing people together and producing positive relations between religions" then they absolutely would not, 100% even consider putting it where they are. If I was looking to bring peaceful debate to a person I'd recently got in a fight with, I certainly wouldn't start this "relationship" by walking up and kicking him square in the sack.

sometimes incendiary actions can be helpful in showing the intolerance a community has for particular groups or sects. instead of being some light commentary, like the incidence of a man running his truck into a gas station that was owned by a middle eastern man, it can become a focal point of discussions, like now.

though i would also agree that it can become counterproductive and pseudo-intellectual, taking an example from the short story "nipple jesus", thence become something it was never intended to be.

Every time you use the word thence, God kills a hipster.

it seems like, through your sarcasm, you're urging me to use the word more. if the opportunity arises again, i assure you that i will take it.

I feel like a Mel Gibson that takes action over a message board due to some mystical power that makes God, a controversial higher up being kill a hipster for using the word thence.

thence thence thence.

So, this has been in the news a lot, but there has been ZERO mention of the date this thing was supposed to be opened, only discussion about it being 'two blocks away'...are we sure it was supposed to open on the tenth anniversary of sept 11th?

This mosque has been four blocks away from ground zero since before the trade center was built: http://www.masjidmanhattan.com/

Opening date aside, it's sad when I hear people upset about building a "mosque" (its a cultural center with a prayer room) "on ground zero" (it isn't).

That's what I kind of feel. If there is ANYTHING to be complained about it's the date. But everything I've read in the paper about people complaining has been the fact that it's two blocks away.

Weak sauce.

I was trying to figure that out, so I went back to page one, and it seems like I was the first one to mention it...and now I cant remember who said that (I could have sworn it was from a story someone linked to on here)...so, maybe they're NOT opening it on the 10th anniversary of 9/11? Fuck if I know...maybe there really is nothing to have our collective panties twisted over.

lol The Post. Not the most reliable source in the world... I don't think the thing is being opened on 9/11/11, personally. That just seems to be a rumor that has gained steam due to how it makes people feel self-righteous.

I actually think that the group building this community center/mosque in that particular locale did so intentionally (they did turn down an offer by the governor to have a different, comparable site found), but for the opposite reasons that are being cited and causing rage. I do think that they wanted to draw attention to the building of it, which would not have been easily accomplished were it elsewhere. However, I think they intended to use the ensuing media coverage as a way to give publicity to their goals, which are peace and reconciliation, building a friendly relationship between the Muslim community and the rest of Manhattan, but it backfired on them just a tad.

the post is in between the national inquirer and a real news paper.
