this would be in the Other Sports section but the baseball part is a side player.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=A ... &type=lgns

"MIAMI (AP)—A Florida girl who grabbed a historic home run ball hit by Philadelphia Phillies slugger Ryan Howard(notes) has her prize back after suing the team for its return.

The July home run against the Florida Marlins was Howard’s 200th. He achieved that milestone in the fewest games in major league history.

After 12-year-old Jennifer Valdivia scooped up the ball, she was escorted to the Phillies clubhouse, then exchanged it for an autographed ball.

The girl’s mother filed a lawsuit Monday seeking the home run ball’s return. Attorney Norm Kent says the Phillies agreed and now Jennifer has the ball back.

The Phillies declined comment on Wednesday."

I think the girls mother is in the wrong here since i doubt that the girl went to the clubhouse by herself. whoever took her to the game had to have gone with her (otherwise thats another lawsuit waiting to happen). They made a trade that both parties agree to. i dont really see how she could win that case. if she tries the "could be worth" argument it isnt a sure thing because Howard could retire after this year. if that happened (however unlikely) that ball would be worth no more then any other homerun ball.

Cooperstown, or bust...

MLB should just put a rule on tickets that (at its' discretion) it retains all ownership rights to any significant (record-setting/record-breaking) memorabilia that may be acquired by any paying ticket-holder (inadvertantly, or otherwise) in the course of a contest or game...

Stuff like that is just stupid. And greedy or attention-seeking.

The Phillies went out to the bullpen, grabbed a ball out of the bucket, and gave it to her.

The only winners here are the lawyers. The mom is a scumbag.

I wouldn't care, personally. it's a ball, big deal. *this might change if i was an actual player though.*

I wonder if she could turn a profit and sell it back to them. That'd be deliciously evil.

Since I don't like baseball I say who cares, it's a ball.

Even if it was a milestone, what's the deal really? You don't need the ball to show off the milestone, the stats speak for themselves, video proof is all you need nowadays.

Yeah, nothing more precious than that rare 200th home run. It's only been done maybe 10,000 times before.

no, that cunts no good, i agree, squanto...

and 200 home runs are special. that is, in my mind, the first step into the upper crust of a legendary home run hitter. that ball would be so sweet to have.

remember the A's hitter a few weeks ago, who hit his first home run, and the guy who caught it said "ill only accept money" and made the price tag for the ball $10,000? only, like, milestone balls are worth that much. and i mean like... 500 home run ball or something huge like that.

i still don't believe it's the actual ball. A letter of authentication really doesn't mean shit unless it can be independently verified which would be pretty much impossible.

She is a tool its a ball, knowing how Ryan Howard is he'll probably just give her a new ball for the one he hit.
