It's Brooks, so it's probably half BS anyways, but that story is pretty scary regardless. Especially with Fehr at the helm of the NHLPA now. Me, I'm taking it as truth.

i actually agree with the new possible rules. the overly long contracts are nuts.

If the NHL did go into a lockout, would it happen this season or next?

I believe it's 2012, as they need to start negotiating for the 2012-13 season. Could be wrong, though.

As a guy who has dabbled in labor study, I highly doubt that another lock out happens so soon.

I think there will be some give and take on both sides. I know more owners are going to be pushing for fewer contracts like the Hossa, and Pronger deals. They are contracts that the player has a low chance of completing given the nature of the sport. These contracts were designed to lower the cap hit on the contract drastically. So the NHL is going to make that a huge bargaining chip, and may give up a bit else where. The players made out like bandits on this past CBA, but they could push for more revenue sharing with the players from ownership.

There are several factors, but these are going to be the major hot button issues this time around. That being said, the NHL is growing, and attracting new fans every day. Both the players and owners recognize this is a good way to put money in their pockets, and a lock out would simply mean less money in both parties pockets, and that hurts everyone. Players, Owners, Fans, Administration, EVERYONE.

I expect the PA to make a concession on this, if the NHL raises the cap, and comes up with a different way to handle the cap. I also expect the players to request more revenue sharing on merchandise, and may request bonuses for players under 35, beyond what is currently offered.

I will be the first to say, there will be no lock out. They will get a deal done, no doubt in my mind. Fehr will come out playing hardball, but will understand that a lock out looks bad for him, and ultimately he'll be the guy catching most of the blame, along with Bettman

It's very possible the NHL has had enough. The NHLPA has to choose their lesser of two evils. Devoided contracts, or new cap hit rules.

I wouldn't put it past Fehr to play hardball though. Hopefully he understands that another work stoppage (no matter who initiates it) would cripple the NHL.

Reject those rules, devoid the Luongo contract, and devoid the Hossa one.

Then they are screwed.

Just kidding, I still think salary and cap hit should be identical, so if you want to front load a contract, you're screwing yourself because the salary is the cap hit now.

Wouldn't it be crazy if Kovalchuk's greed caused another lockout?

Who's to say he is greedy at all?

He could have easily asked for a 10 year 100 million dollar contract or even worse, 10 year 110 million dollar contract.

He isn't asking for a contract that pays him league max in salary cap at all for his entire contract duration.

He probably isn't even asking for a 17 or 15 year contract, he knows his contract i going to circumvent the cap and lower the cap hit totally so he's agreeing to it to help the team out.

He's agreeing to it because it's a fuckton of money upfront and guaranteed. If it gets accepted, he'll play here until the money drops off, then retire and go play in Russia for a couple more years for more money.

It's all about money. He could care less what the term is as long as he gets that green.

TSN reporting the NHL and NHLPA have come to an agreement that will result in the disputed contracts being grandfathered in, any future contracts structured as such invalidated, and Kovalchuk's new contract approved.

No war.

That's what playing in Atlanta too long (the winning doesn't matter attitude) did to this massively talented player.
